Where to avoid the freshman fifteen

To some students, the dreaded freshman fifteen is a scary reality that may end as the senior sixty by the end of their collegiate careers. For students at Southeastern, one option of avoiding this fate is to take a visit to the Claude B. Pennington, Jr. Student Activity Center where there are plenty of options for students to remain fit and healthy.

The Pennington Center offers students a variety of ways to stay active during the semester. A fitness room is open to students seven days a week, but be sure to bring a towel when visiting. Featuring an abundance of treadmills and elliptical machines to shed away the pounds, free weights, benches and other strength machines to sculpt the body are also available. Students have the opportunity to finish off their workouts by relaxing in one of the saunas located in the locker rooms.

For those who do not find the fitness room as the answer to staying fit, the Pennington Center offers other ways to have fun and sweat at the same time. An inside track is available to runners hoping to escape the hot August heat or to avoid unfavorable weather. There are also two racquetball courts that are open to students on a first come, first serve basis. Finally, there are also multiple basketball courts for students to test their hoops.

One does not have to commit to the traditional exercises of running and lifting weights to remain fit at the Pennington Center. Various classes are offered every semester to help make working out enjoyable. Yoga, Jiu Jitsu and Zumba are just a few of the classes that have been administered in the past, all free of charge.

The Pennington also gives students the chance to socialize and meet others through intramural sports offered every semester. Whether students who are interested already have a team together or are in search of joining one, Southeastern Intramurals have put together men’s, women’s and co-ed leagues for flag football, basketball, soccer and even dodgeball, to name a few.

Also located inside the Pennington Center is the Pride Café offering wraps and breakfast made from organic produce delivered by Poche Farms. The cafe also sells protein shakes to help recuperate muscles following a hard workout.

Speaking of recuperating muscles, massages are also offered at the Pennington Center. Students may set up appointments to enjoy their choice of a Pure Swedish massage or a Pure Deep Tissue massage. For more information or to make an appointment for a massage, contact Megan Mast at (985) 549-5728.

The Pennington Center provides students several different ways to stay in shape, relax and have a good time away from the classroom. Whether it is sweating it out in the fitness room or shooting hoops with your friends in intramurals, there is something for everybody at the Pennington Center. Call (985) 549-5591 for more information on the Pennington Center and all it has to offer.
