Lip sync competition returns with new event

Last year, organizations paired together to choreograph Lip Sync routines, falling under the theme   “Step Right Up for Roomie Under the Big Top.”  By the end of the night, the judges had named the top three winners. Theta Phi Alpha and Theta Chi (bottom) took home third place with the theme “Fire Breathers.” With their theme “Sideshows,” Alpha Sigma Tau and Kappa Alpha Order (top) won second place. Taking home first place was Alpha Omicron Pi and Delta Tau Delta (middle). For the upcoming 2015 Lip Sync competition, organizations’ performances will correspond with the theme  “Roomie’s   Big Night on Broadway.”

As Homecoming Week is just around the corner, organizations are preparing their lip sync performances for the annual Lip Sync Competition.

On Thursday, October 15, students will get a blast from the past as sororities, fraternities and other organizations pair together to dance and sing along to songs from Broadway musicals and plays, including “Wicked,” “Jersey Boys” and “Footloose.”

Like the previous years, the night will begin with a bonfire and pep rally, recognition of homecoming court members and encouraging words from head football coach Ron Roberts. However, before the Lip Sync competition begins, there will be a new event: Roar Like a Lion Yell Competition.

“This is an event that is very popular at other universities and is traditionally called ‘Yell Like Hell.’ Roar Like a Lion Yell Competition [will] consist of one to two minute chants, which teams will perform for points during the Bonfire/Pep Rally,” said Student Government Homecoming Director Regan Cascio.

Besides Cascio, the idea was a collaboration of SGA Homecoming Director faculty advisor Dr. Pam Rault, SGA president Alexis Quackenbush, SGA Vice President Bradley Watson and Assistant Director for Student Affairs Kyle Gallagher.

“I believe we have designed a competition which will not only display the team’s passions for their organizations but their passion for our school as well,” said Cascio.

In addition to the new Roar Like a Lion Yell Competition, there will be two new events added to this year’s Homecoming schedule.

On Sunday, October 11, to begin the week, teams will decorate the campus to be sure everyone knows Homecoming is here. On Monday, October 12, there will be a Homecoming Kick-Off.

“In years past, people did not even notice it was Homecoming Week,” said Cascio. “We are hoping to change that this year by having the campus completely decorated in school spirit. [The Homecoming Kick-Off] will take place between 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. There will be a DJ, and students may pick up a copy of the Homecoming schedule and a free Homecoming T-shirt while supplies last.”

The final adjustment to this year’s Homecoming schedule is the Ready, Set, Glow 5K. Last year, students were able to run in the Dye Dash, but for this year, the race will be a blacklight 5K. All money raised will be donated to the Southeastern Food Pantry for needed food supplies.
