Hammond Horror Fest ringing in Halloween

The Hammond Horror Fest returns to spook and thrill the city for its fifth year in a row.

The event will be held October 8 through 10. The festival kicks off with a Freaky Film Night showing of “Casper” at Wyatt’s Comics and Cards Thursday, October 8 from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m., followed by the Macabre Masquerade Ball at the Hammond Regional Arts Center Friday October 9 from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m.

The ball will include a Zombie Fashion Show, dance and musical performances. The “Horror-Themed Art Market” will also be at the ball. Author of “The Adrian Trilogy,” Lyn Gibson, will be among the local artists and performers at the market, ringing in the Halloween season with entertainment themed around Louisiana urban legends.

The festival concludes with Seven Legends of Louisiana, a 24-hour theater event presented by Alpha Psi Omega at the Pottle Music Building Saturday, October 10 from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m.

This is the second year the ball will be open to all ages, and admission to each event will be available at the door of their respective locations.

“We had a very successful fundraiser at Augustines on September 18 with the help of a lot of talented local musicians,” said HHF co-creator Taylor McLellan. “We also did a Zombie Walk at Hot August Night. Those are events that we look forward to every year to get the word out to the community about the festival.”

Since 2011, the HHF has provided a gathering space for those who both create and enjoy the alternative arts to bond while educating all who are interested in learning the various aspects of the horror genre as well. Past festivals included screenings of classic Horror films such as “Night of the Living Dead” and the sci-fi thriller, “Alien.”

According to McLellan, last year’s fest was their best yet.

“I guess it was the winning combination of the right team of artists and the right time,” said McLellan. “It was our first year throwing the event in early October.”

Following the successful format from HHF 2014, events will be located in and around the downtown Hammond area.

Each year, a different crop of “Seven” for the Seven Legends of Louisiana is chosen as the central theme for the festival and then used by the players to write, rehearse and perform a show all within 24 hours.

“We have done everything from deadly sins to twisted fairy tales to signs of the apocalypse, and now we have chosen to focus on the black magic and voodoo that is such a solid part of Louisiana culture and folklore,” said McLellan. “We view it as an opportunity to be both entertaining and educational to our audiences.”
