The Lady Lion’s Volleyball team (8-11, 2-3 Southland) was defeated by the University of New Orleans Privateers (11-9, 2-3 Southland) in three sets, 25-22, 25-22 and 25-23. 

“We knew UNO was much improved from previous season and that we would have to play our best to be successful against them,” said Head Coach Jim Smoot.

This past weekend, the Lady Lions traveled to New Orleans on Saturday October 10 to play in the Human Performance Center. This was the first time New Orleans beat the Lady Lions since joining the Southland Conference. 

“Going into the game, I really did not know what to expect since UNO has a very different team than they have had in the past,” said junior outside hitter Parrie Hartley. “But after watching film on them and trying to see what their tendencies were and looking for their weaknesses, I felt confident in the match.” 

The Lion’s offense was led by Hartley with 12 kills and Landry Bullock with 11 kills. The offense also had help from Haley Baker who had 19 assists and Mikayla Shippy who had 17 assists. Veronica Turk also contributed five of the seven blocks throughout the match. Monica Ramon led the team with 13 digs. 

“I think our team did decent against UNO,” said Hartley. “The outcome did not go our way and we made a few little mistakes that we could have avoided and those added up in the end, but we showed some fight towards the end of the match.”

The team had a total of 21 errors, two aces and also a total of 41 assists.

“As a whole our team did not perform as expected,” said Smoot. “We seemed to lack the fight that was required. Our blocking, serving and serve receive must become more consistent if we want to make the conference tournament. Our goal is still to qualify for the tournament and then secure the bid into the NCAA’s.”

The Lady Lion’s come home to host Stephen F. Austin on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the Dig Pink Match and Northwestern State for Homecoming on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
