The many benefits of getting involved on the campus

    Jonathan Rhodes Headshot

When I started going to this school, I was very shy and did not see the benefits of joining a club or student organization. But, now that I am a junior and have been with the student organization for multimedia journalism the Press Club, I see how it can shape a person’s college experience. For me, joining a club is all about what you are interested in doing.

Being a communication major focusing on journalism, the Press Club was the organization that piqued my interest. The Press Club has helped me professionally as a journalist and I have been given the chance to learn what is required to succeed in this field, and how to get internships. The Press Club is actually a big reason why I applied to work at “The Lion’s Roar.”

Not only has being in a student organization helped me to reach some of my career goals, but it has also helped me to develop new friendships. These friendships are easy to develop because you and the other members are interested in the same things. Making friends through clubs and student organizations is also a good way to find out more about what events happen on campus and how you can participate in those events. If you are shy like me, you’ll want someone to hang out with on campus so you’re not alone most of the time.

There are also many campus ministries on this campus that engage in extra-curricular activities and help you to grow spiritually. For me, that campus ministry is Lions for the Lamb where I get the same benefits of joining a club, and also get to fellowship with other Christians on campus. Being in Lions for the Lamb has been like being in a family on campus that looks out for each other.

Student organizations are geared to helping students do better in class as well as out of it. You can also learn a lot from the upperclassmen in these organizations. They have been there, know how to pass tough classes and what professors to take.

If you really like sports, you should get involved with intramural sports. Students and employees of the Student Activity Center compete in a variety of sports depending on the semester. If you like organizing and being a part of big events, then join the Campus Activities Board. They offer a variety of events for the students of the university. There are plenty of options for extra-curricular activities on this campus. So don’t just go to school, get involved and get a better college experience.
