With March underway, it’s time for the university’s fifth annual “Tea with Friends” event. “Tea with Friends” welcomes students, guests, a featured author and all members of Friends of Sims Library (FoSL). FoSL is an organization that supports the activities as well as collections of the Sims Memorial Library located on campus.
“‘Tea with Friends’ is the annual members tea of the Friends of Sims Library,” said Library Director Eric Johnson. “It features an author speaking about his or her work with a book signing following. It doubles as the Friends’ annual membership meeting, and includes a brief overview of the friends’ activities over the past year.”
According to Johnson, any current FoSL member will be at “Tea with Friends” and they are allowed to bring any guests. While the tea will be free for members, it will cost $25 for the public and any guests.
“This year’s tea takes place on Saturday, Mar. 5 at 2:00 p.m. on the second floor of the library, doors open at 1:45,” said Johnson.
Past authors over the years have included Susan Larson, Christine Wiltz, Nigel Hamilton and Christina Vella. This year, “Tea with Friends” will feature author Poppy Tooker.
“Tea with Friends” originally started Mar. 11, 2012, and it has grown in attendance and members each year.
“Since its an annual event, we hold the tea each year in March,” said Johnson. “This year’s author is Poppy Tooker, food activist, writer NPR radio and PBS television personality and a delightful and engaging speaker.”
According to Johnson, any funds created by the event and other FoSL events are going to be used to help the library’s budget such as being able to purchase any equipment and resources, provide programs lectures, author readings and sign-ups as well as any other special events that could occur.
“All money is used for Sims Library,” said Johnson. “Not only are attendees supporting Sims Library, but they also will enjoy a variety of teas and a selection of delectable sandwiches and pastries. They will also be entertained by an interesting speaker who is passionate about food.”
