HAMMOND-Southeastern Louisiana University has launched a new safety guide on its website that provides specific instructions and recommendations for action in the event of an on-campus emergency.

The site, southeastern.edu/safecampusapp, is designed to be mobile accessible by the campus community via smartphones and other devices.

Among the areas addressed on the site are instructions on how to react in the case of an active shooter or stabbing on campus, bomb threat, fire or explosions and intruders. Other sections address procedures to be taken for a lockdown, shelter in place, evacuation, physical injury, sexual assault, weapons on campus and weather emergencies.

The new site is part of a comprehensive review and updating of Southeastern’s emergency management guidelines.

“Safety for our campus community is of paramount importance,” said Vice President for Administration and Finance Sam Domiano who chairs the university’s Safety Management Committee. “With this new site, individuals will be able to instantly access emergency protocols on their smartphones or computer.

The university is also printing pocket-sized guides for individuals to carry and specially designed handbooks for university offices.

“Of course, we will continue to use our emergency alert text and telephone system and our main website to keep the campus informed about any situations developing on campus or weather-related warnings and updates,” said Domiano.

He noted that the more than 500 Northshore Technical Community College faculty, staff and students who are teaching or taking classes on the Southeastern campus will now be able sign up for the alert system.

“While most of our faculty, staff and students are enrolled in this emergency alert system, we are always looking for increased participation,” said Domiano.

Students, faculty and staff can register for the system by visiting southeastern.edu/about/safe_campus/alert/.
