Several campus departments such as Campus Activities Board, Student Government Association and Office of Multicultural and International Student Affairs have strategically postponed, planned or created events as a result of the university’s change in academic calendar due to the historic flooding in local areas.
Lion Craze, Paint Party, Best Dressed Den, Move In Mane-ia and Oops, I Forgot followed their original schedule. CAB and the Office of Student Engagement oversaw Move In Mane-ia, but did not include the social events because of the flooding.
“The students have now up until Friday [Aug. 19] to claim their room,” said Director of Student Engagement Pamela Rault. “Move In Mane-ia continued to accommodate the students who still wanted to move in. We pulled together and contacted housing to do an assessment of how many students were on campus and how many were going back home.”
Traditions week continued on Tuesday, Aug. 16 and 17 with several showings of CAB Movie: “Captain America: Civil War” in the Student Union Theater. On Tuesday, the movie was shown at 7 p.m. and on Wednesday, it was shown at 12 p.m., 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the Student Union Theater.
“I think it’ll become a twice a month event in the semester,” said CAB Administrative Assistant Cecelia Palumbo. “Everything else is going on as scheduled.”
On Thursday, Aug. 18, Grocery Bingo was held from 5-7 p.m. in the Pennington and included free pizza, refreshments and prizes.
These events were not previously scheduled on the specified dates but were created in consideration for students who were already on campus.
Along with the start of classes, and Traditions resuming, “Just Ask Me” tents were available from 7:30-11:30 a.m. on both Monday, Aug. 22 and today Tuesday Aug. 23 in the quad area.
“It made sense to push back the ‘Just Ask Me’ tents because it’ll better serve the students on the first two days of school when they are looking for buildings or have specific questions about campus,” said Rault.
CAB Movie: “Captain America: Civil War” will be shown at 2 p.m. and later tonight at 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. in the Student Union Theater. The CAB City Sampler takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside of the Student Union.
“The biggest adjustment we had to make was the City Sampler,” said Palumbo. “We had to give the businesses notice of the change in date. The event is to let the students know what was out there for them as far as local businesses.”
On Wednesday, Aug. 24, from noon to 2 p.m., Get the Scoop Involvement Fair will be held outside of the Student Union. The Pennington will also host Connect at the Rec from 3-5 p.m.
CAB will host Coffee and Live Music from 6-8 p.m. outside of the university Starbucks on Wednesday. CAB Movie: “Captain America: Civil War” will be shown at 2 p.m., 5:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. in the Student Union Theater.
The Part-Time Job Fair will be held in the Student Union Breezeway from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25. Later that night from 7-10 p.m., CAB After Dark will be held at the PSAC.
According to coordinator of multicultural and International Student Affairs Brendan Daigle, the Zeta Phi Beta Back to School Barbecue was initially taking place on Aug. 17 and has been tentatively rescheduled for Aug. 23.
Let’s Get it Started will take place on Aug. 31 from 6-9 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. It will begin with a panel discussion by the African-American Alumni Chapter, include a departmental browse and organizational browse in the Student Union and conclude with a block party in the Student Union breezeway.
“It’s a welcome event for the new students and welcome returning students,” said Daigle.
CAB and SGA both confirmed that Homecoming Week will take place Oct. 16 to 22 ending with the Homecoming game, on Saturday, Oct. 22.
According to Palumbo, other CAB events such as Gumbo Ya Ya will take place on Oct. 19. On Nov. 19, the Miss Southeastern Pageant will take place. Also, Fall Break that was scheduled for Oct. 13 to 14 has been cancelled.
Rault confirmed that Strawberry Jam and Freshmen Success Day have been postponed until further notice. Family Day will take place on Sept. 24, and Mocktails will follow on Sept. 28.
According to Rault, the last day of Sorority Recruitment, Bid Day and the Internal Planning Retreat were all rescheduled. The last day of Sorority Recruitment took place on Saturday, Aug. 20 and Bid Day took place on Sunday, Aug. 21.
“The Internal Planning Retreat was intended to allow the 3 branches of SGA (executive, judicial and legislative), to prepare for the upcoming school year,” said Rault. “We know some of the students in SGA were affected by the flood, so we want to do an assessment and see when would be a better time for the retreat.”
