Find time and get involved on campus

    Jonathan Rhodes-Staff Headshot

Being a college student at times can seem like a stressful experience that constantly keeps you doing homework, assignments, studying and possibly working. But, that is not all to being in college. There is so much more that we college students can do that enhances the college experience. This fall is a great opportunity for new students and returning students to get that experience.

Sure, the flooding took away a few events like Strawberry Jam and pushed back Hammond Regional Arts Center’s October exhibition for a year, but there are plenty of other opportunities this semester to get involved on campus. Do not let the flooding be the only thing you remember about this semester.

You might be shy like I was when I was a freshman and would walk past a large gathering of students and not even bother to see what it is about. Don’t be like me. Get involved with the stuff you see happening on this campus.

Not only will you enjoy yourself, but you will meet new friends. You never know when you might meet that person from one of your classes at an event on campus and from there you both have something to talk about before class the next day.

The events on campus that I personally hope you attend this semester are sporting events. Even if you are not a big sports fan you will enjoy going to a Lions football game. There will be so much for you to do besides just watching the game, and the experience is better if you go with friends.

However, the biggest events this semester will take place around Homecoming. Events such as the Homecoming Kick-Off and Gumbo Ya Ya, all lead up to the big Homecoming football game where the new Homecoming king and queen are crowned. It’s an event that shows what Southeastern is all about and you will regret not being a part of it.

Students should participate in as many of these events as they can during their college life. These events bring all kinds of people together and in a world that constantly uses our differences to remain divided, you should take the time. You have right now to interact with your fellow students and get to know them. So do your homework, get to class on time and be a good student, but get involved. Do not watch everyone have fun. Go out and have some fun once in awhile. Put on your SLU shirt and show off your Lion pride.
