As students prepared for the start of school, an unexpected but dangerous flood appeared in the area forcing administration to postpone the start of the semester and other events.
Fall 2016 semester was originally planned for Wednesday, Aug. 17; however, the start date was moved to the following Monday, Aug. 22. Along with this, students were also given extra time to register classes and pay their fees before beginning school.
In response to postponing the start date, Fall Break is no longer scheduled.
Collegiate Panhellenic Council Formal Recruitment’s Bid Day scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 13 was pushed back to the following weekend Sunday, Aug. 21.
The annual faculty convocation was postponed and has yet to be rescheduled.
Hot August Night has been rescheduled for Aug. 26.
Following the flood, students were sent a mass e-mail, with an intent form for students to fill out with information as to how the flood affected them and/or their family.
President Dr. John L. Crain reports to The Daily Star, “about 7,500 Southeastern students are from parishes that experienced major flooding.”
In response to the surveys, many employers from various campus departments contacted students directly who had been affected.
As of Friday, Aug. 19, callers had reached out to about 4,000 students; however, they continue to contact more students.
Looking into the future, the softball team’s fundraiser has also been cancelled.
Hammond Regional Arts Center has also made adjustments to its upcoming events’ schedule. The expected October exhibit has been rescheduled for next year and “Distracted” will now take place in the Vonnie Borden Theatre. The Macabre Masquerade Ball is now combined with the 48-Hour Film Festival and will take place on Friday, Oct. 14.
