Student Conduct Hearing Board searches for new members

The Student Conduct Hearing Board is a committee composed of students, faculty and staff members who hear disciplinary cases that occur on campus grounds. It is the board’s job to authorize and decide if a student or a student organization has violated the Student Code of Conduct. It is also the board’s job to take disciplinary actions.

“When a student violates campus rules, the Student Conduct Hearing Board creates a disciplinary conference, which is held by student and faculty staff members,” said Office of Student Conduct Director Dr. Eric Summers. “Once the board gathers and looks at the case given, the board then decides on further actions.”

The Student Conduct Hearing Board comes from the student’s rights that are granted through the university. It gives the charged student a chance to plead against their charges fairly, such as having a legal representative present.

According to Summers, to be a student member, one must have; a 2.8 cumulative GPA, good disciplinary and academic standing, a minimum of 30 plus hours earned, full-time student status, a strong work ethic, the ability to maintain confidentiality and the ability to serve the entire academic year. The board looks for students who have things such as: leadership skills, communication skills, problem solving skills, et cetera.

The board also expects student members to attend training to resolve cases, maintain a strong sense of integrity, be able to critically analyze cases and evidence and most of all be respectful of all individuals involved of cases.

If you are a student at the university and are interested in being a part of the Student Conduct Hearing Board, their recruitment is taking place now through Sept. 2. Membership is free and looks great on a resume.

“It is important that students are aware that they have a job opportunity that can enhance their educational advancement,” said Summers.
