    LaFevor brings Cuban culture

Art usually reflects aspects of human connection. Some details of history concentrate on the relevance of location and the significance of culture. One artist has managed to reflect both in his artwork.

An exhibition featuring artist and historian David LaFevor who is an Assistant Professor of Latin American History and Digital Humanities at the University of Texas in Arlington will soon come to the university.

Southeastern’s Contemporary Art Gallery brings the exhibition “Cuba: Histories of the Present” to campus on Thursday, Sept. 8 beginning with an opening reception at 5-7 p.m. and will be opened until Thursday, Sept. 29.

The UTA Center for Greater Southwestern Studies has organized the exhibition that features LaFevor’s photography taken in Cuba between 2001 and 2015. According to Dale Newkirk, Interim Department Head of Fine and Performing Arts and Director of the University Art Gallery, the center contacted the gallery in regards of featuring the exhibition.

“They sent out a request to galleries and museums looking for venues for this traveling exhibition that they organized,” said Newkirk. “I felt it was a really good time to show an exhibit focusing on Cuban art in photography in light of the recent political issues between the United States and Cuba.”

According to Newkirk, the gallery will feature over 30 pieces of work from LaFevor. LaFevor’s work focuses on the citizens of the places that he travels to.

“The artist David LaFevor has been going there [Cuba] on and off for many years before the opening of ties with Cuba,” said Newkirk. “This work is a result of that. It focuses more on the people and their lives in these somewhat exotic places, places that have a strong sense of identity.”

Newkirk describes the exhibition and lecture as a possible “cultural exchange” and “intimate portrayal.”

“It will be a reflection of culture and its people to give people a greater understanding and may stimulate greater interest through the artwork and artist lecture,” said Newkirk.

On Tuesday, Sept. 27 at noon in the CAG, an artist lecture will feature LaFevor.

“He will be talking about his ongoing work in Cuba and life and culture there,” said Newkirk.

Newkirk describes the event as a “lunchtime lecture” and admitted that the lecture is scheduled around lunchtime, as well as exhibitions and workshops have been scheduled in consideration for students.

The lecture will include refreshments and Newkirk encourages students, faculty and the public to attend. The art gallery opening is free to the public.

According to Newkirk, gallery openings typically occur from 5-7 p.m. For those seeking a schedule of gallery events, contact Newkirk by email at [email protected], or call the gallery at 985-549-5080. Visit the gallery’s Facebook page at SLU Contemporary Art Gallery to subscribe for notifications of gallery events.
