    Part-time opportunities offered for students

All employers provided information about their business, while others offered candy to students who stopped by their tables. Others, like KSLU, gave away free T-shirts. Everything done to attract students worked, as the job fair saw a massive turnout.

For decades, students have come in scores to the annual Part-Time Job Fair seeking employment, information and free goods.

The fair took place on Thursday, Aug. 25 in the Student Union Breezeway. Many employers in the local area participated. Restaurants included Domino’s Pizza, Cracker Barrel and Chick-fil-A. As for other businesses, there was the Pelican State Credit Union, La Capitol State Federal Credit Union, Global Wildlife Center, AT&T, and more. The New Orleans Pelicans were also in attendance looking for game day volunteers and recruiting members for their upcoming Swoop Troop auditions.

According to Lauren Shaman of Pelican State Credit Union, the company is eager to hire Southeastern students.

“We’re really looking for anybody with a go getter, positive attitude,” said Shaman. “A lot of what we do is customer service based, so anybody who is friendly, positive and loves helping people is all we’re looking for. We can train people for anything else. The only thing people really need is the right attitude.”

Shaman has also attended past job fairs, and will attend the Career Fair in September. She recalled her success with Southeastern students.

“We don’t have a lot of part time positions, but the ones we do, we try to fill with students,” said Shaman. “And all of the positions where we’ve hired Southeastern students have worked out really well. I think the job fair is a great way for us to get our name out there because people usually don’t think about coming to work at a credit union part time.”

However, employers were not the only ones pleased at the job fair. The information available, as well as free candy at some tables and T-shirts at others intrigued students. Gabrielle Gaspar, a freshman art major, found the job fair very informative.

“I think it’s pretty good,” said Gaspar. “I’ve never been to a job fair before, so it’s interesting to visit one for the first time. I really liked the table with the group that helped small children. It’s mainly because I have a younger cousin I’m always helping out.”

Overall, the job fair was considered a success by Career Services, who hosted the event. The parking lot behind Fayard Hall, which is normally used by faculty, was blocked off until 10 a.m. According to Career Services Director Brittany Bacques, the event was planned and the lot reserved two months in advance.

“It’s my seventh job fair,” said Bacques. “Turnout was excellent and we had nothing but positive comments from employers.”

Bacques was also concerned about turnout with recent flooding. In spite of the disasters, the job fair enjoyed strong attendance.

“I was worried fewer people would come,” said Bacques. “But, I expect we had about 500 students stop by today.”
