Better to share space with a roomie

    Morgan Ledet's Staff Headshot

College can sometimes be difficult. You have classes, work, homework, a social life, studying and you still need time to sleep. This is where a student needs to remain calm, but sometimes this can be difficult to do on our own. Sometimes we need to vent to someone. Sometimes you need a “person.” This is where a roommate comes in. I will warn you that the roommates I have lived with have all been close friends of mine. Basically, this will focus mainly on living with friends. Obviously, I do not know anything about living with a stranger, “hahaha.”

As a Southeastern Lion, I have lived with three separate roommates. I lived in a shared dorm my freshman year and in two different apartments with two different people while attending school. I also lived by myself, but I will be honest. As much as I loved living by myself, it is so nice to have someone there for you. If I need help with something or just need someone to talk to, all I have to do is walk across the hall.

I love having time to myself, but I also like eating dinner and being able to talk to someone about my day. It is also nice to have a movie night. If you live with someone, you always have someone there to watch movies with you, too.

Living and going to college in today’s society can also be very expensive. What better way to save money than to share rent, utilities and groceries? My roommate and I may not have the same tastes all the time, but for the most part we eat the same things. It helps when we can split our grocery bill.

It is honestly a great experience to share things like apartments and secrets with someone you are friends with. The only downfall to living with a roommate is that you are always with this person. So, sometimes you may butt heads, but that will blow over quickly. I have had a fight with every roommate I have ever had and we are all still friends. So, if you are afraid of living with a roommate, don’t be. It is so much better than I could ever explain in words.

Just last week, I was very stressed from work and she suggested we do a puzzle. Anyone who knows me, knows that I absolutely love puzzles. They are very relaxing to me and she knew how stressed I was and she knew exactly what would help. Having a roommate is good in so many ways, but having a roommate that knows what can help me stay calm is a plus on so many levels.
