Lions climb ladder for sixth placeat Jim Rivers Intercollegiate

The Lions golf team improved from their tied sixth place finish last week, finishing sixth place at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate in Choudrant, Louisiana. After starting at seventh place for the first day, the Lions climbed higher on the second day.

“The team had an above average performance,” said Head Golf Coach Jake Narro. “We did good. We finished sixth. We were hoping for a little better but everyone tried their hardest and gave a good effort.”

Sophomore William Meyers led the Lions shooting a 1-over-par 145 on the first day of the tournament after having his career best in the last tournament. Sophomore Bailey Smith tied Meyers for 16th place shooting a career best 3-under-par 69 in the second round. Seniors Paul Obermann and James Anstiss were in an eight way tie for 29 place with 4-over-par 148 shooting.

Sophomore Bailey Smith did best on day two with 1-under-par 71 tying for sixth place in his second collegiate tournament. Meyers tied for 11th place with four other golfers at 1-over par 217. Meyers finished the tournament with 12 birdies. Obermann finished in a six way tie for 23rd place and also tied for second in the tournament with 39 pars.

“William Meyers’ entire tournament was very impressive as well as Bailey Smith who played as an individual,” said Narro.

This season, the Lions have had to comeback in both tournaments from being in the bottom five to finishing in the top six. In this tournament, the heat played a key factor in the progression of the Lions.

“That second round is an endurance test,” said Narro. “In 95 degrees, sometimes your concentration can slip so we let a few shots slip away. But, other than that we had a good event.”

The Lions will play in the David Toms LSU Intercollegiate on Oct. 8-9 in Baton Rouge. The team will take the time they have to practice to work on finishing better in their last two fall tournaments.

“We’re gonna continue to work on offensive facets of our game,” said Narro. “We will especially target our chipping and putting.”
