The Public Broadcasting Service has provided an educational series of videos based on innovative, modern artists around the nation. These artists use a variety of forms to convey a modern idea of the world and work with unique mediums to gain more attention in contemporary art.

The Contemporary Art Gallery presented the PBS “Art 21 Season 8: Chicago Art in the Twenty-First Century” at 5 p.m. on Sept. 21.

Presented by director of the CAG Dale Newkirk, art students and the public participated in his lecture and they previewed the new episode about the importance of knowing modern art and what is popular in the arts throughout cities around the nation.

This preview included four artists from the Chicago area. Costume designer Nick Cave, installation artist Theaster Gates, new age photographer Barbara Kasten and sculptor Chris Ware.

According to Newkirk, CAG has been chosen as a venue for PBS four times and is the only public venue for this series in Louisiana.

“This is a great resource for the public and Southeastern art students to become more aware of what is going on in larger cities in the contemporary art scene,” said Newkirk. “Where you live makes a huge difference in your work and viewing what other living artists around the nation are creating can help you as an artist to produce better works and become more innovative.”

Students who attended were excited to view the video as a group. Some saw the opportunity to view artwork they may have otherwise never seen. Others saw it as an opportunity to connect with other artists.

“I think the film was a great way to connect with other contemporary artists and art in cities I may have never connected with,” said Brianna Reeves,

an art education major concentrating in painting.

The individual artists shown in the video impacted other participating art students.

“The second artist in the video I found to be interesting,” said Akilah Spears, a senior art major concentrating in ceramics and painting. “He seemed to be an older person who still did not think of himself as an official artist even though he spends over forty hours a week working on his cartoons. He relates to me as a student because he spends most of his work time developing ideas for multiple of his projects opposed to actually focusing on one project at a time. I also appreciate the third artist from the video and the process of her new age photograph. She is a great example of progression and how when you master a specific medium in art it is okay to move on to your next idea.”
