Local artists will have a chance to present their various works at the Hammond Horror Fest 2016. Music, visual arts, dance, film, theatre and more will be presented at this Halloween- theme festival. Extending from Oct. 14 to 15, the festival will include a Masquerade Ball, a play and a belly dancing performance. Participants can also view the horror-theme arts market on the first night.

The annual festival began in 2011 and focused on promoting local multimedia artists. It has since expanded and this year contains new features, as well as re-occurring events from previous years.

“Each year the festival has a similar outline, but it will be different based on the artists that participate,” said Chad Winters, instructor of acting and directing. “We welcome any artists to reach out to us about becoming involved.”

Oct. 14 will focus on a new addition, the 48-hour film showcase. Filmmakers had a chance to shine and horrify in this presentation of original horror short films. Contestants were given strictly 48 hours to plot, film, shoot and edit their film.

After the showcase, there will be a masquerade after-party. The whole event intends to last from 6 until 11 p.m. There will also be a Livewire performance. Costumes are encouraged, but not required for the masquerade party.

It is scheduled to be at Gnarly Barley Brewing Company in downtown Hammond at 1709 Corbin Road. The La LA Tribal belly-dancing troupe will perform a choreographed show that is meant to horrify and thrill the audience in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the movie “Labyrinth.” The second night will revolve around the theatre production of university students.

Alpha Psi Omega will be hosting their fourth theatre performance, “The Seven Tales From the Labyrinth.” This performance will be a 24-hour play. This means they have to write, rehearse and perform within 24 hours. It will be held in Pottle Auditorium and admission will be $7. The previous annual HHF’s have seen other programs by Alpha Psi Omega, including “7 Signs of the Apocalypse” in 2013, “7 Twisted Tales” in 2012 and “7 Deadly Plays Made in a Day” in 2011. Traditionally, each performance would contain seven 10-min performances depicting a general theme throughout the entirety of the show.

This year, special thanks are given on HHF’s website to Taylor McLellan and their sponsors. These sponsors include: The sponsors for this year are Gnarly Barley, Smoothie King on Sw Railroad Ave and Mariner's Inn. This event supports the American Cancer Society and other local organizations, as well as promoting local art organizations. Students have a chance to support these organizations by attending the HHF.

“It’s going to be a great time and our organization is non-profit working hard to raise money for the Cancer Society,” said Winters. “Our students won’t only be having a good time, but they will be supporting a good cause.”

The short film, arts festival, masquerade ball and performances will have an admission fee of $20.

“I think it’s a terrific way to get ready for the Halloween season while also taking in some of the arts and culture that Hammond has to offer,” said Tara Bennett, Media Coordinator for the Hammond Regional Arts Center and member of the La LA Tribal troupe.

“And with our generous sponsor Gnarly Barley this year, it looks like it will be one of the biggest parties this year,” said Bennett.
