First Responders all over Tangipahoa Parish will be honored for their service during the flooding that occurred in August this year. A Southeastern Salute tailgating party will be hosted by the university before the Lions football game against McNeese State.

“I think anything that we can do to get the community and the students involved with the university is big,” said Director of Athletics Jay Artigues. “This event is an avenue to get people to be a part of this university and any way we can do that we are excited to be a part of.”

Southeastern Salute will be held this Saturday, Oct. 8 at Student Union Park from 1 to 3 p.m. The tailgating party will not only be for police officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians, but any citizens who helped their community and are still doing so today.

“There were so many people that helped,” said Artigues. “Obviously you tip your hat to those police and firefighters because they were the first one’s to obviously respond in any type of crisis. The community really got involved. Our students, our student athletes, our community members, our professors, instructors and administrators; everybody really pitched in.”

The flooding in August called everyone into action to help the victims in the affected areas.

“You hate to see something like the flooding happen,” said Artigues. “But when you see the outpouring of support by our community here in Hammond and the surrounding areas, it says a lot about our university and our community.”

Every Lions athletic team helped out during the aftermath of the flooding.

“The good part now is you’re seeing people move back in and rebuilding,” said Artigues, “In the interim, it’s tough. You have to make improvements and you’ll see destruction before you see it improve. When this didn’t immediately impact us right here on campus, a lot of student athletes who weren’t affected were able to get out and give support. Unfortunately, Katrina gave us a lot of practice with this. I hate that we are getting use to this happening, but I am glad we could help.”

All people are invited to the tailgating party. There will be food, door prizes and entertainment for all attendants. First Responders are encouraged to bring their families to the event.

“It’s really just our way of saying thank you,” said Artigues. “We are getting them to come out here and show them that support so they feel appreciated because they sure enough are.”
