Campus residents need to be respectful with noise

    London Taylor's Staff Headshot

Living on campus is one of the most exciting moments as a college student. In my experience, living in a dorm is awesome, but there’s only one problem, the noisy people. I find it very rude that people can be so inconsiderate when it comes to making a lot of noise. Loud music is one of the primary problems I have with some of the residents, especially my noisy neighbors. I understand that people like to jam out to songs out loud, but come on, the least they can do is keep it at a moderate level.

It irks my nerves that I have to be constantly annoyed by all the music and movements that go on in the dormitory. One morning, I had to ask my neighbor to turn her music down because it was too loud. It took more than three knocks just for the girl to open her door. Even though I was getting ready to go to class, I was frustrated because I couldn’t hear “Law and Order: SVU.” I feel that if your music is so loud that I have to turn the volume up on my television and still can’t hear it, then you deserve a loud knock on your door.

What makes situations like this worse is that I am nice enough not to report the concerns to the Resident Assistant. Yet, people still don’t consider how others may feel about it. A week or so after confronting my neighbors about the loud music, my roommate, Kahne, had to do the same to them. It didn’t take her as many knocks to get their attention as it took me, but she did get her point across, the same as I did. I just don’t understand why it has to take an arm and a leg to get people to respect others. If you live in a residence hall, I feel as though you shouldn’t just think of yourself when you’re about to do something noisy.

Besides the loud music in the residence halls, there is also another noisy thing that annoys me, loud movement. The girls that live directly above me make so many loud movements that it’s not even funny. I can even make a song reference because it’s as if I can hear every little step they take. They stomp so loudly that you would think Big Foot lived above us. So, not only do I have noisy neighbors next to me, but I also have annoying neighbors above me.

Keep in mind that the neighbors above me were reported to the Resident Assistant about the loud stomping, and they still continue to stomp as if they are in a marching band. The point I’m trying to make is to be considerate when you’re about to do something that is noisy. Be respectful and stop the loud noises.
