The music department on campus contributes to the community by offering free academic musical performances of all genres. Students, faculty and guests were able to attend a classical musical performance last week.

The Southeastern Louisiana University String Quartet, instructed by Zorica Dimova, held a concert in the Pottle Auditorium on Monday, Nov. 6 at 5 p.m. The concert was approximately 45 minutes long and consisted of three sets.

The first set was “Van Beethoven – String Quartet Op. 18, No. 1” and “Allegro con brio,” performed by musicians Soyeon Rachel Seo, Malik Chaney, Dimova and Adrian Harabaru. The second was “Borodin – String Quartet No. 2” and “Scherzo and Notturno,” performed by musicians Mikhailo Levitskiy, Mark Paclyuk, Dimova and Harabaru. The third was “Mendelssohn – String Quartet Op. 13, No. 2,” “Adagio non tanto” and “Adagio – Allegro vivace,” performed by musicians Marta Turianska, Sungkyung Woo, Dimova and Vasyl Kuvayskov.

Audience members were excited to be a part of the concert. They felt the music was beautiful and the musicians were well prepared.

“I thought the concert was really awesome,” said April Johnson, a freshman art major. “The pieces were very beautiful. I am actually taking a music appreciation course right now. That is how I found out about this performance. I think this performance is my favorite so far this semester. The melodies of the songs were just beautiful and the musicians were very tight with one another. They seemed to have been well practiced.”

Other music students also attended the String Quartet to earn credit for their current classes.

“I thought the performance was really nice,” said Kaitlyn Townsend, a senior psychology major. “I enjoyed the whole performance, but my favorite part was the second piece. They were all wonderful performers. I am currently in Music 151 and we have to attend several performances here. I chose to come to this one, and I am happy I did. It was worth it.”

Visual art students were also able to enjoy the concert and gain an appreciation for a new music genre.

“This is the first time I attended a string performance here on campus that only included instruments like violins,” said Dominique Lopez, a senior art major. “I feel like I have a new appreciation for this type of music. I normally listen to pop and more dance music, but I really enjoyed the concert. I was able to sit back and enjoy the harmonies of the violins and the deep voice of the cellos. I would definitely go again.”
