The Southeastern Sims Memorial Library is home to many great ways to help improve student’s academic careers. One recent improvement to the library’s tool collection is Mángo Languages.
Last week, the Sims Memorial Library and the Office of International Initiatives on campus hosted International Education Week.
Purchased with funding from a large student tech grant, Mángo Languages is a way for university students to become more familiar with international language opportunities.
“Currently, Mángo Languages offers courses in over 70 languages, 21 foreign films and over 17 specialized ESL courses,” said Angie Balius, Reference/Outreach & Instructional Media Librarian. “Once you open a free account, you create your profile and then track your progress.”
Mángo Languages is easily accessible to students who live on campus and commuters.
“Users can access Mángo from on or off-campus by going to the library homepage,” said Balius. “From there, you simply click on the Articles & Databases tab, then look for find ‘Database by Name’ and then click ‘M’ to see a list that includes Mángo. There’s even a free app so you can take Mango with you as you commute to campus or walk to your classes.”
Mángo Languages offers courses such as Spanish, Italian, German, Croatian, Swedish, Hindi, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Shakespearean English and Pirate. There are also courses on languages such as Russian, Greek, Portuguese and French.
Mángo is a program that is offered free to all university students and is created on a web-based program.
“Mángo Languages is self-paced,” said Balius. “It is a web-based program that gives users a quick introduction to a language and culture through conversational skills. It’s free to all Southeastern students and staff who may access it from on and off-campus.”
