Community celebrates spring with Egg Scramble

Children of all ages and adults scrambled to collect eggs filled with candy and prizes. The event was sponsored by Mission Church and Chick-Fil-A of Hammond as part of Super Lions Saturday.

The Lion community decided to add a little extra green and gold to spring in preparation for Easter by holding the Egg Scramble.

Participants of all ages gathered for an Easter egg hunt that was held right after the football scrimmage in Strawberry Stadium. 50,000 green and gold Easter eggs were scattered onto the field, each containing a letter that indicated different prizes. The grand prize of this year’s egg hunt was a year’s supply of free Chick-Fil-A.

The event was held by The Mission Church located in Hammond. The first time the church hosted the egg hunt at the university was two years ago. Last year, the spring game fell after Easter, so no egg scramble was held.

The idea for the event began two years ago when The Mission Church had a brainstorming session with the university on how they could make the Super Lion Saturday more effectively connect with the community. The church usually had egg hunts on their property but decided to make the move so that even more members of the community could get involved.

Many members of the community were ecstatic with the event. Lauren Gaudin, a member of the Hammond community, had her two children participate in the Egg Scramble.

“This time of year, we’re trying to get out and have fun around the community,” said Gaudin. “So we enjoyed today.”

While many activities were held on Super Lion Saturday, Gaudin said she came especially for the Egg Scramble.

“It was awesome,” said Gaudin. “We couldn’t make it early for the other events, but we came just in time for the egg hunt, and we all like it. We were out for the 25 and under and won a basket. It was a win for everybody”.

The coordinator of the event Pastor of The Mission Church Deven Pedeaux explained the work that went into executing the event.

“It took, to stuff these eggs, hundreds and hundreds of hours and about 200 volunteers that put this together,” said Pedeaux.

Member of The Mission Church, Alexandria Norwood was the winner of the free year of Chick-Fil-A prize.

The event produced smiles that could be seen all around Strawberry Stadium. Pedeaux summed up the success of the event.

“I just love it when on a beautiful day seeing so many families out just having a great time and it just shows what a great community we live in and how we love our university,” said Pedeaux. “We love the lions and just look for all kind of creative ways to support our lions.”
