Members of the Hammond community gathered to participate in the Lion’s Athletic Association Green and Gold 5k Run and the one-mile Fun Run.

Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Development Tom Dawsey elaborated on the runs which took place on Apr. 1 from 8 a.m. until the last participant reached the finish line on the south end zone of the football field.

“Basically, the Fun Run and the 5k are an opportunity for us to kick off Super Lion Saturday,” said Dawsey. “We have all of our spring sporting events. Softball, tennis, baseball, our spring games all taking place today. This event kicks Saturday off, and it’s an opportunity for folks to see our campus. We’ll run around a lot of our athletic facilities. So, folks get to enjoy that and also see the beautiful campus. This year’s route will be a little bit different, actually start and finish in this football stadium.”

The first participant to complete both runs, earning the title of overall winner, was Scott Henderson, a 1996 graduate.

“The one mile was a lot of fun,” said Henderson. “It was really just a warm up. There weren’t a lot of people running, so I decided to run it. My daughters ran the race, so I ran with them. That kind of got my heart up and running stretched out and ready for the second 5k. The 5k is fun. I’ve run it a few times. It’s my third time to run it. I kind of knew the route and knew the course. It’s fun to be out there with the other runners.”

Scott Henderson’s daughters, Hannah Henderson and Leigh Henderson both ran the Fun Run as well. The two girls shared their running experience with their father, and expressed interest in following his university choice.

“We had a blast,” said Hannah Henderson. “We did this one about two years ago. Every race we do, we always come in holding hands. It’s just kind of our thing we do. But it was kind of fun, these hometown races. We’re definitely coming to Southeastern.”

Leigh Henderson expressed that she and her sister ran with their father despite personal misgivings. She elaborated that she enjoyed running the Fun Run with her family members.

“I don’t really like running, but I think these are fun,” said Leigh Henderson.

Participants included members of Lady Lions teams as well as Hammond residents ranging in age from a 51 and older group to a 14 and under group. Other runners came back to run the Green and Gold 5k Run after not running it in recent years.

A resident of Hammond and husband of a university graduate, Mark Seale, participated in the 5k. He described the run as something he had previously enjoyed and rejoined as a result of running with his wife.

“I just run the 5k,” said Seale. “I ran the first one that they ever had, but I’ve been doing other things and now decided to just come back and run it again for fun. I’ve been running for about five years. My wife got me started. She started running, and I saw she was just having too much fun, so I decided I said, ‘Well, I’ll get back running again.’”

The participants of the 5k Green and Gold Run held on Super Lion Saturday began their race at 8:30 a.m. on the south end zone of Strawberry Stadium. Participants ran around campus and had the opportunity to view various facilities. There were several age groups sectioned within the participants that ran.
