New addition to university affiliated social media accounts

One social media account is offering a new perspective of members of the lion nation.

Senior business marketing major Chase Cangelosi created the Instagram account Humans of Southeastern that took inspiration from the Humans of New York Instagram where the content focuses on photographing the community and writing about their life story. The Humans of Southeastern account was started last semester in April and now has over 1,000 followers, depicting students from the university.

The idea for the Instagram account first began when Cangelosi bought the new iPhone 7 that included the portrait setting on it’s camera and that is when the aesthetic from the Humans of Southeastern’s Instagram was launched. Cangelosi wanted to create an Instagram that would depict the university student body in an organic, unedited way just as he had seen from the Humans of New York’s account. Cangelosi describes his vision for the Humans of Southeastern’s Instagram.

“It’s funny,” said Cangelosi. “If I’m posting a picture of myself on my personal Instagram, that picture is edited. But, with these pictures, it’s the same concept every time. I’mgoing to take a picture of you, roughly face, shoulders, maybe a little more body. It’s going to be a blurred background. No edit whatsoever. Whatever the phone makes is what you get. Then, I always ask them to caption the picture.”

Once he found his Instagram’s branding, Cangelosi then had to find models for his posts.

“A lot of them have been my friends who I thought might have a great quote,” said Cangelosi. “Getting the quote is the toughest part in the world. A lot of them have been people who asked me.”

Cangelosi feels it might be hard for the Humans of Southestern’s account to gain recognition due to the plethora of campus organizations with their own Instagram accounts such as dining, housing and athletics.

“We’re not selling meal plans,” said Cangelosi. “We’re not trying to make people come to our laser tag night. We’re not trying to make people come to our seminar. All we’re doing is giving them a nice, little picture of a student and saying, ‘Go out in school, meet this person and shake their hand. Introduce yourself, and let’s build a community one person by one.’”

To increase flow to his page, Cangelosi seeks out those actively involved in Southeastern’s many Instagram accounts to follow other lions.

“It leads to me seeing a bunch of people’s posts and Instagram stories,” said Cangelosi. “People who I have no clue who they are. It’s kind of cool because I feel like I know honestly almost everyone at this school whether I’ve actually met them or not.”

Cangelosi feels he is following his passion toward his career in business by operating the Instagram account and encourages everyone to also follow their passions.

“Everyone deserves to be themselves,” said Cangelosi. “You have a unique quality that other people want to know about whether you know it or not, and if you ever feel the need to start something of your own, just go for it. Usually, people will respect you more doing something that you’re passionate about.”

If interested in running the Humans of Southeastern Instagram, Cangelosi is looking for a freshman or sophomore student to take over the page when he graduates. He also encourages students to send any ideas to improve the Instagram account.
