Hurricane causes postponement of homecoming festivities

Homecoming festivities such as the parade originally scheduled for Oct. 7 will be postponed until Oct. 28 due to the urgent threat of Tropical Storm Nate.

Governor of Louisiana John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency concerning the tropical storm. According to a video obtained by The Times-Picayune, Edwards said that people should prepare for a tropical storm that may intensify in the Gulf of Mexico.

The university used Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to inform students, faculty and staff of how the tropical storm has affected homecoming events.

According to a social media post from the university, “Saturday’s Lion football game kickoff is moved up from 4 pm to 10 am. All homecoming activities- including alumni and donor recognition events, Homecoming parade, introduction of the Homecoming court and crowning of the king and queen, as well as tailgating- scheduled for Saturday are postponed until the Oct. 28 football game. Activities and events set for this Thursday and Friday remain scheduled as planned.”

The Office for Student Engagement acknowledged how students are affected.

According to an email from Student Engagement, “We understand that you are all eager to showcase the hard work put into your parade floats, hear results of the Homecoming Sweepstakes, and for the unveiling of the 2017 Homecoming Court.”

The Oct. 28 game will be against Sam Houston State University and include the homecoming events originally planned for Oct. 7.
