Lady Lions grab two more wins to continue streak

The Lady Lions softball team won two more games this past week to add to their unbeaten run. This brings their record for the season up to four wins, one tie and no losses.

They competed against Coastal Alabama Community College on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 5 p.m. and Baton Rouge Community College on Friday, Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. The Lady Lions won 15-2 and 12-0, respectively.

“The game against Coastal Alabama a pretty good JC team, I thought our team came out really strong with energy and a great offensive attack, and we also took care of the ball,” said Head Coach Rick Fremin. “There was just a lot of energy with our offense and defense, and there were just a lot of exciting plays.”

The Lady Lions gave up two runs, and senior pitcher Lacey Hill was not happy about it.

“Our defense was kind of rough pitching-wise,” said Hill.

They corrected their defense for the game against Baton Rouge Community College, and held the opposing team to no runs.

“The pitching staff did a great job doing what they need to do,” said Fremin. “Other than early, we gave a couple of free passes on the walks. We have to eliminate those, but I like what I’m seeing right now in the fall.”

Also corrected in the game against BRCC was the Lady Lion’s offense. In previous games, they have been slow to get on the board, but started this game with a double play in the first inning.

“I just feel like whenever we turn a double play, it helps the momentum of the game and helps us on defense, especially on transferring over to offense,” said sophomore pitcher Tanner Wright. “It gets everybody up.”

That transfer was effective, with the Lady Lions scoring runs in seven innings, with another double play in the seventh.

“We were able to string a few hits together offensively, and some of the pitchers did really well as a staff,” said Fremin. “So, I was just really encouraged to see them feeding off one another.”

Among those pitchers were Hill who led the team with four strikeouts, and Wright who followed behind with three. When it comes to batting, however, the Lady Lions’ freshmen have been turning up. Freshman catcher Shaye Tredinich had three hits, the most in the game, with freshman infielder Madison Watson following behind with two.

“We have a lot of freshmen coming in, and they’re doing great when they get in the game,” said Hill. “They’re getting innings. We’re all very close-knit right now, and the chemistry is great.”

Senior outfielder Maddie Edmonston and freshman outfielder Anna Rodenberg each had two RBI.

“I thought Anna Rodenberg did a great job offensively putting the ball up in the middle of the field,” said Fremin. “She had some real quality at bats.”

Meanwhile, freshman utility player Cameron Beal had three runs scored with junior infielder Rebecca Skains, freshman utility player Camryn Flanagan and Rodenberg having two runs each.

“The freshman have adjusted extremely well,” said Fremin. “Their learning curve has been cut in half because typically it takes them about a year. I think they may be ready to go after a fall season.”

After the fall season is conference play, where the freshmen and returning players alike will be put to the test.

“The Southland three game series is brutal,” said Fremin. “Any team can beat anybody. We’ve got a long ways to go, but I think we’ll be in the mix.”

The Lady Lions next game will be against Copiah-Lincoln Community College on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 4 p.m.
