The Lady Lions soccer team hosted Lamar University last Friday, which resulted to a 2-1 loss. The defeat meant the team dropped a position to ninth in the conference standings and dropped their overall record to 3-7-3 and 1-3-2 in the Southland Conference.
The Lady Lions had their hopes restored after senior midfielder Maddie Kresevic’s goal. However, they couldn’t close the gap despite their efforts.
“No matter the outcome, we’re gonna keep pushing and fighting the hardest in the upcoming games to get a spot in the conference tournament,” said Kresevic.
Head Coach Christopher McBride gave his thoughts on the team’s performance.
“We moved the ball well,” said Head Coach Christopher McBride. “We moved into the middle pretty well, and we got the ball into the final third a little more to create some chances. We got the balls up there, but they were just bouncing in the box. We have to do a better job attacking the balls.”
Lamar currently leads Southland Conference, along with McNeese, with 31 points and has an overall of 10-3-1 and 5-1 in the Southland Conference.
“Lamar is a good team, top of the conference,” said McBride. “With all the goals they scored this year, it was going to be hard to shut them out. They scored two goals, we got back with one, but once you get down to 2-0, it’s going to get really tough to get back in the game. We created some chances, but they’re a really good team.”
There were certain areas in the game where the team could have performed better. McBride acknowledged that the team isn’t perfect and there are places to improve.
“We can always improve in all areas,” said McBride. “No one’s a perfect team. Everyone looks at their team, and there’s always some spaces that they can improve. We will look for those spaces to improve, and we coaches will go back and sit down, have a little chat and try to work it out.”
The Lady Lions will face Stephen F. Austin State University on Friday, and McBride hopes that a day off will get the players back at their best.
“We will be ready for the game against Stephen F. Austin,” said McBride. “We’ve got Sunday off, and that’s a good opportunity to get some rest. We’ll get refocused for the week and get ready for next Friday.”
Redshirt junior midfielder Maggie Ramsey, with her two shots, placed herself in the fifth position in the Lady Lions’ career list with 162 shots. She’s also on the verge of securing 10th place for most goals.
“Being top five for shots in career list feels great, and now I’ll try to get to the top 5 for goals,” said Ramsey. “I’m two goals away from being 10th. It’s just coming with time. I still have a whole season ahead of me. It’s just one of those things that’s on the back of my mind, and I don’t really think about it when I play.”
