The “Fine and Functional Show” hosted by Hammond Regional Arts Center is scheduled to be held from Nov. 3 to Dec. 20. Media Coordinator Tara Bennett explained the things that people should expect when they come to the art show. She hopes that everyone will come out and enjoy what they see.
“Look for art to wear, art to hang, art for the table, art for display, plus many beautiful pieces,” said Bennett. “Whether you’re doing holiday shopping for friends, family or yourself, this show hosts a colorful array of handmade, handcrafted selections including stained glass, quilting, fine arts, paper crafts, photography and jewelry.”
Bennett explained what the featured theme of the event will be and what the artwork can be used for. She hopes that everyone will enjoy what the show has to give and find artwork that they will love and use.
“There is no specified theme, other than each item is functional artwork,” said Bennett. “This means the items serve utilitarian purposes but possess an aesthetic that brings the object into the realm of fine art. Functional artwork is very inclusive and encompasses items ranging from clothing to dishware to rugs.”
Bennett explained how the works at the show will be selected and what kind of artist will be there.
“Fine and Functional is curated by local stained-glass artist Jerry Hymel, who has organized the show in the past and is quite passionate about the exhibition,” said Bennett. “Each year, Jerry sends out a call to artists who then apply to appear in the show by sending examples of their work.”
HRAC puts on this show through the holidays so it gives people a chance to buy something useful and make a great gift for people. This gives artists a chance to show off their work to the public and get good or bad feedback.
“Today functional artwork is acquired by art collectors as much as fine art for the object’s beauty and value,” said Bennett. “But rather than sitting on a shelf, these objects can be used in everyday life, which we like to promote as an area of the visual arts.”
Bennett would like to ask everyone to join them during their holiday hours, which is Friday, Nov 17. during “Starry November Night”, and on the following Saturdays: Nov. 25, Dec. 2 and Dec. 9, from noon until 5 p.m.
