Sophomore quarterback Lorenzo Nunez received the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year honor at the end of the 2017 football season.

According to lionsports.net, Nunez is the first university football player to earn the honor since the university became an official team of the league prior to the 2005 season. Nunez is also the second quarterback to be recognized and honored in the program’s history by the Southland Conference.

Nunez’s stats this season as recorded by the lionsports.net website included his average of 35 rushing yards per game and has ran 5 touchdowns in.

Head Coach Ron Roberts spoke on behalf of Nunez’s accomplishments this season.

Roberts described what kind of person Nunez is on and off the field.

“Obviously on the field, he is an avid football player,” said Roberts. “He is terrific and impactive for football games, and he’s a great player. Off the field, he’s a decent guy. He is just great to be around. He’s got a great personality, and he’s a great representative of this university.”

Roberts explained why he feels Nunez was chosen as the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year.

“He made a huge impact,” said Roberts. “You know, you hopefully have a good guy who makes the biggest impact in his conference and as a newcomer he came in. Well, he got hurt a couple of games and all and was sent help, but he was in there. I mean, he’s obviously had a huge impact on our success and racked up a lot of points for that five-game stretch. He’s a guy everyone’s gotta account for.”

Roberts expressed his feelings on Nunez receiving this honor and acknowledgement, and its impact for the organization.

“I’m excited for him,” said Roberts. “I mean I’m excited any time a kid gets any type of recognition. That’s awesome, and he put a lot of hard work and force in trying to get the recognition. It’s exciting because we haven’t had it for our program.”

The Lions football team finished the season with an overall record of 6-5.
