The golf program strives for better results after 17-18 ranking

The golf team started their spring season in Humble, Texas with the All-American Intercollegiate tournament at the Golf Club of Houston.

The team was unable to get enough preparation due to bad weather conditions after coming back from Mardi Gras break. The lack of course time in practice resulted in the team finishing 17th amongst 18 participants.

“It was our first event out with all the bad weather we’ve been having,” said Head Coach Jake Narro. “We have not had too many opportunities out there in practice, and it showed.”

Narro and his players are ready to get on the grind when they return to Louisiana and get competition ready for the rest of the spring season.

“We really just need some reps, driving range and practice time to knock off a little rust from the holiday,” said Narro.

The three-day open began with the team performing at 4-over 292 in the 54-hole tournament. Starting players for the tournament included freshmen Logan Kuehn and Kristofer Kerr, sophomore Connor Wilson and juniors Joris Etlin and William Meyers. Etlin finished in an eight-way tie for 17th place with a best score of his career, a final-round 1-over 73. Junior Bailey Smith was unable to attend the tournament.

Narro explained how Kuehn is progressing and how he can produce improved results in the competition.

“Logan got off to a good start,” said Narro. “He just didn’t quite pull it together throughout the entire match, but he’s getting better all the time. He just needs to continue to learn from his mistakes and build from on his success.”

Kuehn described his disappointment in not being able to be consistent throughout the tournament.

“It was fairly rough,” said Kuehn. “I did some good things. I gave myself some opportunities to score, and then I fell apart in most of my rounds.”

Even with his rocky start to the season, Kuehn enjoyed the tournament and the time he could spend on the golf course.

“It was almost nice just to actually play in the tournament because we haven’t been able to play,” said Kuehn. “That’s probably the best part.”

The team went into the tournament focused and motivated to do their best. Narro explained that the team was able to go in mentally prepared despite a lack of time to be physically ready.

“It’s easy,” said Narro. “They all golf so much. They are ready to get into it. So fortunately for them, it’s an easy part of the job.”

Narro and his team decided to take this tournament’s results as a learning experience and have set goals for the season.

“We’re just going to double our efforts every second that we get back,” said Narro. “I hope to push them to their fullest potential. I expect us to compete in the conference championship. The golf program is looking forward to the spring. We have a good schedule coming out, and we’re going to some nice places, and the guys are working hard, enjoying their time.”
