    Thank you Kappa Sigma

    Dear Editor,

The Southeastern Louisiana University campus and Kappa igma fraternity recently held a fundraiser called Susan G. Komen’s Coins for a Cure. Kappa Sigma Fraternity supported Stephan Chiasson who will begin her three-day 60-mile walk in Texas in November for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.  First, I would like to applaud Kappa Sigma in their fight for the Breast Cancer Foundation. I believe the more that people know about these events, the better.

Kappa Sigma has made a difference in this fundraiser. They chose to take advantage of social networks by notifying all of their Facebook friends. Notifying their friends on Facebook helped make this event more noticeable. Most college students have Facebook accounts, and spreading the word through Facebook is like fire spreading through woods.

Because Kappa Sigma started this fundraiser through Facebook, it allowed more attention to be brought to the campaign.

The number of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer is dreadful. Many women in America suffer from this disease each year. There are different types of breast cancer, yet most are deadly. It is this big help from such a small hand in the community that can make a big difference.

Another thing many people are not aware of is that men can get breast cancer as well. People need to know the seriousness of this disease and that thousands of men are diagnosed each year. Breast cancer is one of the most widespread cancers in the United States. People need to realize how important of an issue this is.

Therefore, I would like to applaud Kappa Sigma for bringing awareness and raising money for Coins for a Cure. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month; it deserved all of the awareness possible.  Kappa Sigma is making a statement in raising money for this important cause. It is a thoughtful action that can be appreciated by all.

Cancer can tear a family apart. I have friends and family members who have been diagnosed with the disease. It is a difficult thing to treat, and often weakens the patient. Patients have to go through days of chemotherapy. They must be forced to eat because they lose their appetites. My grandmother and a close friend of the family was diagnosed. Unfortunately, neither of them became cancer survivors. It broke our hearts to see them go; yet we became stronger as a family. It gave us a realization that anything can happen and that anyone can be diagnosed with breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Awareness has the potential to make a difference and to begin something surprising for cancer victims. It can give them hope, strength and help to believe her faith. It can do for the same for survivors.

Kappa sigma has done a wonderful thing by helping the victims of breast cancer. Coins for a Cure was a great way to inform and     involve people with breast Cancer awareness month and was a great success. Raising money for Chiasson’s walk is one step closer to finding a cure. Together we can make a difference by spreading the word and supporting the victims of breast cancer.

Thank you Kappa Sigma for all that you’ve done in our community. One small act can change the lives of others.
