    Lions ride Green Wave 13-1

The Lion’s baseball rode the green wave all the way to a 13-1 victory against Tulane last Tuesday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. This was the first home game of the 2011 season for the team and with a crowd attendance of 1,706, a complete success overall.

Lion fans were confident even before the first pitch was thrown.

“This is going to be a shut out,” said sophomore athletic training major, Cassie Callais.

During the first inning Tulane was unable to score any runs against left-handed pitcher, Jordan Hymel. When the Lion’s took to bat, short stop Justin Boudreaux and left fielder Jeff Harkensee both scored the Lions first two runs.

In the second inning, Tulane was once again unable to score. The Lion’s continued there scoring streak when second baseman Brock Hebert, center fielder Cass Hargis and third baseman Jonathan Pace scored the next three runs for the team. This made the score 5-0 Southeastern at the bottom of the third.

The third inning started and once again, Tulane was unable to score. When the Lion’s took the plate, the score doubled. Hebert scored his first home run of the season with a shot over the left field foul pole and added to the Lion’s growing score. Then when Harkensee came to the plate he followed suit and hit a grand slam over the right field fence bringing in Bourdreaux, Pace and right fielder Cody Gougler. This ended the inning with five more runs for the Lions, bringing up the score to 10-0 Lions.

Tulane’s luck changed in the fourth inning when left fielder Blake Crohan scored Tulane’s first and only run. The Lion’s then added a run to the score when Hebert scored another run. Then Boudreaux hot his second home run of the season, bringing in himself and Pace. This was the end of scoring for both teams.

The game ended after 5 more innings with the final score being 13-1 with the victory going to the Southeastern Lions.

Fans were more than impressed with the team.

“The game was awesome,” said sophomore nursing major, Jordan Russo. “It was my first time watching Southeastern, and I was quite impressed with their pitching and fielding.

Hymel and Harkensee were also impressed with the fielding and hitting done by his team.

“It was a good game:, said Hymel.  “Offense came through and really helped me out on the mound. It helped me relax. It’s my first game back after surgery and I am just glad to be back.  And the season looks good. We’ve got a solid staff in the bullpen and our hitters are doing a good job by helping us out. All we have to do is focus on every pitch and we’ll be fine.”

“It was a good game for us,” said Harkensee. “We came out and scored early and often against them which is good. Jordan came out throwing a lot of strikes which made quick innings for us so we could come back in and hit. We got on top of them early and didn’t let up. We are looking forward to the new season and excited for it. We’ve got a really good team that could do a lot of big things. For us to beat Tulane in front of the crowd we had here tonight was awesome.”

Head coach Jay Artigues was also proud of his team and looks forward to an upcoming season.

“I was just proud of the guys and the way they came out and played,” said Artigues. “Jordan did a great job on the mound and getting that big lead early helped out our pitching staff.”

The team plays again tonight at rival school, LSU. To follow the team or to answer any questions, visit the website www.lionsports.net.
