Southeastern’s “Mocktails” is an alcohol awareness event put on each fall Semester to educate the college community about alcohol-free living. The Mocktails event gets its name from the different “mock” cocktails that are served at the event by multiple campus organizations.

Organizations participated in Mocktails on Sept. 29 by creating a mocktail drink and a booth that correlated with the “’90s cartoons” theme of this year. The organizations were judged for best booth designs, best mocktail creations and best overall.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) won first place for best booth and first place overall with its “Rugrats” booth and themed drink. Kappa Sigma Fraternity came in second place for best booth with “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and was followed by University Housing’s “Pink Panther” booth in third place. The organizations that won for best drink were LearnMoney 360 and its “The Scrooge” drink in first place, followed by Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. in second place with the “Kamahama Blast” and the Student Government Association (SGA) in third place with the drink “Wildberry Tea.” The Peer Educators Educating Peers at Southeastern (PEEPS) People’s Choice Award was also given out to the community’s vote for best booth, and the award was given to the “Super Mario World” booth cooperatively presented by Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority and Theta Chi Fraternity.

“I think that organizations can have fun with any type of theme that’s thrown at them,” said Jenée Ratelle, Greek Life student worker and senior marketing major. “I think they all loved it.”

From Greeks to campus organizations, all students were invited to attend this free event. The organizations that participated were Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity; Alpha Sigma Tau; Black Student Union; Circle K International; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; Delta Tau Delta Fraternity; Gamma Beta Phi; Kappa Alpha Order; Kappa Alpha Psi; Kappa Sigma; LearnMoney 360; NAACP; The Phellas; PEEPS; Phi Mu Fraternity; Psi Chi; Southeastern Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (SAFCS); SGA; Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.; Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority; Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity; Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity; Theta Chi; Theta Phi Alpha Fraternity; Theta Xi Fraternity; Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.; and University Housing. This event was sponsored by PEEPS, the Office of Greek Life and the University Counseling Center.

The night started off in the Student Union Theater, where students listened to Erica Upshaw speak about her experience with alcohol and how it has affected her life. Her story left many students with a different perspective about alcohol.

“I think the speaker had a great point, and she really brought in her personal experience to get a good message across,” said Ratelle. “And I think if students actually listened and took that in that it definitely had an affect on them.”

Afterward, students made their way to the Student Union Mall, where each organization set out its display to be judged. Students were able to taste each drink that was prepared. During the event, judges made their way to each booth, scoring organizations on their booth and drink. Among the judges were Student Publications Director Lee Lind, Disability Services Coordinator Leigh Smith-Vaniz and University Housing Area Coordinator Aaron Sinclair.

Immediately following Mocktails was the PEEPS blackout after party. There, the trophies were awarded to the winning organizations and free food was given to all of those that attended.

The purpose of this event was to create a peer-friendly atmosphere to effectively encourage alcohol-free living.

“It reminded me of the importance of being smart with alcohol,” said Ratelle.
