Inaugural pageant highlights Kappa Alpha Psi Week

The Nu Omega Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi celebrated their annual Kappa Week. The theme this year was “Krave” because it was a week Kappa Alpha Psi had been craving to arrive.
In celebration of Kappa Alpha Psi Week, a total of nine events were held from April 28 to May 2.
The week started off Sunday with “Blessings at Mount Bethel Church” followed by “Wine & Cheese.” Monday, the “Inaugural Miss Krimson & Kreme Scholarship Pageant” was held in the Student Union Theatre. “Pie Yo Favorite Nupe” and “Preserve Yo Sexy with C’Yo – Fitness Klass” took place on Tuesday. Wednesday, “Kappa Kodak” and “Well Dressed & Groomed Forum” for gentlemen was held. “Late Night Real Talk” was held on Thursday, and on Friday, the week ended with a dance called “Krave at the Grand.”
“[The purpose of this week is] to engage with the students. Just to be one-on-one with the student body and give them a chance to do things that usually are not typical, to bring something new to the campus,” said Brandon Daniels, a senior majoring in finance and current president of the Nu Omega Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi. “What we stand for is trying to help the student body and let them know that these organizations on campus are here to help. We’re willing to do whatever it takes to make sure that the students on campus have a great time while they are in school. Also, we promote doing well with scholarships and academics.”
Maya Gauthier, a freshman majoring in communication sciences and disorders, won first place in the scholarship pageant and the title of Miss Krimsom & Kreme. She received a $500 scholarship, on behalf of the Nu Omega Chapter, and Jasmine Jackson, runner up, received a $100 scholarship
The Miss Krimson and Kreme crown was given to someone representing the Nu Omega Chapter who is the voice for the women. She must be experienced in community service and achieve at all extracurricular activities that she is involved with as well as her academics. For the talent portion of the competition, Gauthier performed a monologue from August Wilson’s play, “Fences.”
“It was really good; it was a great experience for me,” said Gauthier. “I got to do something else completely out of my box and it allowed me a chance to meet some new people who came to other events, and some girls from the pageant. It was a really great competition. Everyone was on an even playing field for me. I was so shocked when I won. Honestly, I was. I think everyone did a fantastic job.”
A fitness class was facilitated by Urban Cardio Dance to encourage people to exercise and have a healthy lifestyle. Southeastern’s alumnus Corey Brown, who was a past president of the Nu Omega Chapter, was the instructor. Brown is one the founding members of Flipside, a hip-hop dance organization at Southeastern.
“Flipside is a platform for dancers and aspiring dancers to train and artistically express themselves,” said Brown. “My role was to come and facilitate it, to bring the concept of having fun and getting in shape at the same time and exposing it to the students here to show them that it’s possible. We were very intentional with creating, facilitating and putting on this event for the students.”
Current Flipside members enjoyed being able to attend the Urban Cardio Dance fitness class.
“It was a lot more fun than I thought it was going to be,” said Jaquan Warren, a junior majoring in graphic design.
The President of Nu Omega Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi felt that overall, The Kappa Alpha Psi Week was a success.
“It’s been a great success thus far. We are moving on with that momentum and everything’s been great,” said Daniels.
