    Full Court Fest attracts fans

With soccer, volleyball and football winding down, students turned their focus to basketball Wednesday, Nov. 3, for the annual Full Court Fest. Students filled the student section to watch the festivities below, ranging from a cash grab to a slam dunk contest.

Just when everyone started to settle in, the lights dimmed, and the lineups for both the men’s and women’s team were called, almost in NBA all-star fashion. From there, the players conceded the court to members of various fraternities and sororities, who put on a fashion show donning Southeastern gear.

The fashion show, which lasted about ten minutes, was held at center court, with models walking from one end to the other, while players from both teams did lay-up drills on each side. After the fashion show, a few lucky students were picked to participate in various games, with the prize being money.

The first event was a musical chairs like game, where each contestant had to make a lay-up and run back and sit in a chair. In the end, junior health and physical education major Melvin Overstreet took the honors. Freshman sociology major Myeisha Honore was picked to join in on-court, but declined.

“I was picked and extremely surprised,” said Honore. “I would have participated but they didn’t have enough basketballs.”

The second was a cash grab, where four contestants were blind-folded, and put on each corner of the court. From there, 200 dollars was sprinkled across the floor, where blinded students scrambled on hands and knees to pick it up.

After the cash grab, came the “Chicken Chunk,” where junior guard/forward Deshawn Patterson squared off against senior guard Chelsea Hix, in an attempt to see who could fling the most rubber chickens over their backs, into a laundry basket several feet away, with Hix coming out the winner.

After the “Chicken Chunk,” came an attempt by junior marketing major Michael Rivas to complete a lay-up, free throw and three point shot in 30 seconds to win $100, and his name in the drawing to win $10,000 later this season. The event will be held seven times at random home games throughout the season, with the ultimate prize of $10,000 coming at the end.

Next in line was the dunk contest, performed by freshman guard Jeremy Campbell, freshman forward Antonnio Benton, junior forward Bryant Purvis, senior guard Trent Hutchin, and last, but certainly not least, senior guard Gary Dixon. The contestants each had two dunks a piece, with the judges being a large portion of the crowd that received signs with numbers on them to judge with. In the end, Dixon won on his final dunk.

“It was good, a lot of excitement,” said Justin Cornes, a freshman majoring in kinesiology. “A lot of fun, a lot of money everywhere, but, I didn’t win.”

“I did enjoy the Full Court Fest,” said Honore. “It was entertaining and had fun watching the activities that different people were participating in.”
