    Alumnus impressed at Homecoming

    Dear Editor,

My name is Chris Clark, SLU Alum from the class of 1978.  I attended Homecoming 2010…first time I had been back to the campus, since I relocated to Southern California, in 1980…talk about eye-opening!  Oh my goodness, no one prepared me for what I encountered, upon my arrival.  I mean, not only has SLU’s campus grown but the city of Hammond, is just wonderful. I was so pleased…proud and honored to say that I’m a product of such a fine institution…not that I wasn’t before, but you know what I mean.

I saw so many of my former classmates…many of whom I hadn’t seen since I graduated, in the spring of ‘78, so needless to say, it was quite the reunion. I spent time with a dear, old friend…SLU’s first Black/African-American Quarterback Kenneth Dale “Stick” McSwain.  He was something else, on the field back then and seeing him and some of the other guys from that day’s era…well, it just completed my trip that weekend.

He told me he that this was his 3rd, successive Homecoming and that he’d also be returning to campus, two weeks subsequent to that weekend, because he was being honored with SLU’s former quarterbacks. I was so excited and had I known, prior to that weekend, that this was to take place, I really would’ve made plans to attend that game, as well.

Anyway, I’ve taken it upon myself to write a little something about him, in hopes that you may want to use it…if space permits, in your last paper of the year or maybe, even do a feature story on him.

I just think it’s important that the current student body knows about him, because he made history at the university.

Either way, it was a pleasure being at the school.  My colleagues and I plan to make it a yearly tradition…returning to SLU for Homecoming.
