    BSU hosts spring social get-together

To kick off the new semester, Southeastern’s Black Student Union (BSU) held a social on Wednesday, Jan. 26, in the Student Union Ballroom. The social stood as BSU’s first official meeting for the spring semester.

The meeting was organized and led by BSU President Jasper Collor along with Vice President Cardarius Murphy. The meeting began with a traditional moment of silence. Collor explained to newcomers that this tradition is for prayer or any other types of worship the different members participate in. Since this was the first meeting, the BSU officers decided to play an icebreaker game.

“At this specific meeting, we want to get to know you and have fun,” said Collor.

The game was a name game and allowed everyone to meet old and potential members. Collor followed this with announcements on dues, upcoming events and information on future meetings. Any student interested in joining BSU must pay dues by Feb. 23, 2011. Dues are $15 and when dues are turned in, the potential members will then be able to fill out membership forms.

To spark newcomer interest, the upcoming events that were shared included activities held during Black History Month. BSU has been asked to create a sheet mural to display in the Student Union as part of a competition.

According to Collor, BSU wanted to hear the opinions of its members and informed the members that they would have a voice in choosing who the mural subject will be. Barack Obama, Bill Cosby and Nelson Mandela were names mentioned as candidates for the mural. A dating game show was also listed as an upcoming event that would be put on by BSU members.

Following the announcements on BSU, social attendees were encouraged to eat food provided by BSU members and mingle with new people. For more information on joining BSU, or future meetings and events, e-mail Lorrianne Lucas at [email protected].
