All students who go out to support the Southeastern Lions basketball teams at their Wednesday home games will have an opportunity to win $10,000 during halftime.
For the seven Wednesday home games of the spring 2011 basketball season, one lucky student will be chosen for the $10,000 shootout.
The contest started at Jam the Jungle on Jan. 19 and will keep going until the final home game on March 2, where the Lady Lions will be playing McNeese State at 7:30 p.m.
The rules of the contest are simple; only Southeastern students may enter. The contestant will only have 25 seconds to meet the requirements, which include making a layup, a free throw, a 3-pointer and a half-court shot.
“The university didn’t give us $10,000 for this contest,” said Jonathan Ambrose, director of the Student Union. “There are insurance companies that we use to the extent that we pay a certain premium in case someone wins. Then, we are covered and they will pay the winner.”
The promotional company that is providing the insurance is Odds on Promotions.
The contest was announced on Dec. 1 at the men’s basketball game against Dillard University.
“We waited for the spring semester because we didn’t want to throw all of our eggs into a basket and no one show up,” said Ambrose. “I think that it was a success because there was over 800 people at Jam the Jungle, but that is a tradition in itself.”
One of the contestants chosen was junior sports management major Carl Grag.
“I went to the game because I know some of the players, but it felt good to be chosen even though I walked in kind of late,” said Grag. “If I would have won, I probably would have deposited it so that I wouldn’t blow it.”
So far, no one has won, but there are still five more Wednesday home games left, which means that there is still a chance to win the shootout. Participants should be at the game at its start and hope that Roomie pulls their ticket.
