    Greeks honored for hard work

On Wednesday, Dec. 1, the Office of Greek Life put on the fall 2010 Greek Convocation. The Office of Greek Life has held the convocation for over 10 years to recognize and honor the achievements of the Greek community as well as its individual members.

“Every day, the Greek organizations do things that merit recognition,” said Director of Greek Life Cherie Kay Thriffiley. “Tonight we recognize those that are measurable, but there are things that they do every day that we will never know about.”

According to Thriffiley, everyone in the Greek community exhibits hard work and dedication every day. They participate in an outstanding amount of hours of community service and give incredible amounts of money to charities, and the purpose of the convocation is to honor those efforts.

Throughout the night, awards were given to individuals for their leadership and recruitment skills, academic achievement, commitment to their responsibilities and for being outstanding members of the Greek community. Recognition was also given to the outstanding chapters of the Greek community and those members of the community who are soon approaching graduation. The new “Mister and Miss Pan-Hel” were also recognized during the convocation.

Along with recognizing and awarding members of the Greek community for their efforts throughout the semester, new members were inducted into the Greek Councils. The Interfraternal Council installed its six new members, and the Panhellenic Council installed its five new members.

“It’s a tremendous honor to be put into this position, and it really means a lot to me,” said Keith Rosenbach, new Interfraternity Council President of Theta Chi. “I am excited and ready to take on my new responsibilities.”

Greek life is one of the representations of Southeastern Louisiana University who assist the campus by providing community service and charitable donations. Fall 2010 Panhellenic President Kelli Jacobson feels that Greek life provides a unique experience.

“One of the main reasons a student enrolls at Southeastern Louisiana University is to obtain a solid and diverse education,” said Jacobson.

Over the past year, the Greek community has welcomed over 100 new members, participated in more than 10,000 hours of service and donated over $35,000 to the campus and Hammond community.
