Cell Phones Targeted in Thefts and Robberies
The University Police Department wishes to ensure everyone remains aware of serious incidents which have occurred on or near campus so you can take steps to enhance your safety. Since November of last year, there have been three cell phone snatchings and other cell phone thefts involving students on campus. We made a press release earlier today regarding one this morning on Texas Avenue. The Hammond City Police Department has also received calls of this type of robbery occurring off campus over the past several months.
No suspects have been identified in these incidents, but descriptions usually involve either one or two male subjects approaching the victim either on foot or in a vehicle and asking to use the phone and running away with it or grabbing the phone from the victim’s hands and fleeing the scene. These robberies and thefts have occurred during both daylight and evening hours and have been committed when there were few or no witnesses nearby.
Anyone having information about any of these crimes is encouraged to contact the University Police Department at 985-549-2222. Our phone lines are available and officers are on duty 24-hours a day for your safety. We ask all of our community members to please remain aware of their surroundings and report suspicious behavior as soon as you recognize it.
