Hammond is officially home to the Aveda Institute, bringing the teachings of cosmetology and esthiology with it.

The spa curriculum relocated from Covington to Hammond in hopes of giving students within and near the city the opportunity to begin the career path of an cosmetologist or esthiologist. Preparations for opening Aveda Institute Hammond began January 2013 and continued until the first class in April 2013. The institute and spa that accompany the institute are currently located at 104 East Thomas Street in downtown Hammond.

“Aveda Institute Covington, which is 25 miles away, was beginning a major building renovation where spa facilities were changing, and the opportunity to relocate the spa curriculum in Hammond was perfect,” said Cathy Kemp, director and spokesmodel of the Covington Aveda Institute. “Neill-TSP, parent company of Aveda Institute South, owns a building in downtown Hammond that lends itself to a perfect spa school.”

Aveda Institute Hammond follows all esthiology curriculum standards set forth by Louisiana State Board of Cosmetology and Aveda. Esthiology is the study of skincare and wellness. Students will become educated in skin care, makeup application, waxing and Aveda products.

“Aveda Institute Hammond wants to offer high quality skin care education to prospective students in Hammond and surrounding cities and parishes,” said Kemp. “Another aspect of the institute is offering luxurious spa service at discounted rates. All services are performed by qualified students under the supervision of educators.”

The presence of Aveda in Hammond also has some benefits for those not interested in attending the school. Southeastern students and residents of Hammond are given discounts for experiencing the services the school provides, such as spa services and facials. They will also be raising funds for Breast Cancer Awareness and Earth Month.

“Aveda Institute Hammond offers Aveda services and products in a lovely setting at discounted rates,” said Kemp. “Students at Southeastern and citizens of Hammond, as well as neighboring communities, will have access Wednesday through Saturday to experience the Aveda difference. Partners and students add to the population of downtown Hammond shopping and dining four days a week. Following the Aveda culture tradition, the Hammond Institute will join forces with the community and other institutes in doing fundraising for Breast Cancer Awareness and Earth Month.”

As a result of the relocation, the spa’s staff in Covington had to move to the spa school in Hammond, but overall the move was fun and exciting according to Kemp.
