    CAG sends off local artists

Among the first of many events to take place in the Contemporary Art Gallery in the 2014 fall semester is the closing reception of local artists Linda Dautreuil’s  “Convergent States” exhibit and Samantha Salinger’s “Video Works.”

The closing reception will take place Tuesday, August 26 from noon until 1:30 p.m. The exhibition has been open all through the summer months, but since fewer students are on campus during the summer semester, the closing reception is meant to give this exhibit more exposure to those returning for the fall.

“In the summer, I like to focus on local artists,” said Dale Newkirk, director of the CAG. “Dautreuil has been a nationally exhibiting artist and leader in the region for many years, and I like her work. She was at a point in her career where it made sense to focus an exhibition on the last 10 years of her paintings.”

According to her website, Dautreuil was born in New Iberia and has lived in Louisiana for the greater part of her life. She relocated her studio to Covington in 1996 and received a Visual Arts Fellowship from the Louisiana State Arts Council two years afterward. She is a painter who mainly works in acrylic as well as mixed mediums on canvas.

In contrast to Dautreuil’s more traditional artistic mode of expression, the exhibition’s other featured artist, Salinger, predominantly works with video media.

“Salinger’s video work was in the New Media gallery because I had looked at her artwork in a show in Florida and felt it would be good for our students to see, and the artist was willing to loan the artwork to the gallery,” said Newkirk.

Everyone interested in the arts or local artists is encouraged to attend the reception. For more information on the closing reception or any upcoming events at the CAG, contact Newkirk via email at [email protected]

throughout the country. She works with acrylic paint and mixed mediums.
