    Entertainment awaits nearby

A typical routine night sitting on the couch of a friend’s apartment watching Netflix can be turned into a night of excitement, entertainment and new experiences.

Living in Southern Louisiana, entertaining and unique artistic experiences often occur in the area.

Various local restaurants in Hammond offer regular live music. The popular Mexican cuisine restaurant, La Carettas, offers live music on the outdoor patio every Wednesday through Friday. Nearby, Mariners Inn offers a free concert every Friday, typically by jazz music legend Eddie Veatch. Brady’s restaurant, which offers classical American cuisine, features a live musician or disc jockey every Thursday and Friday.

In nearby Ponchatoula, Warehouse 140, a recently opened restaurant and Saloon offers live music, disc jockeys and room to dance. Music varies between country, swamp pop, southern rock and cover bands.

“We hope that SELU students will come out and enjoy the entertainment we have at Warehouse 140,” said manager of Warehouse 140, Melissa Rohner. “I can tell you to be on the lookout for our calendar post of events. We will have Chee Weez, Bag of Donuts, Groovy 7, Dustin Sonnier, Jaryd Lane just to name a few.”

For those looking for a bigger music setting, The House of Blues hosts rising and known bands nearly every day of the week. The well-known music venue is set in the New Orleans French Quarter and offers a restaurant and two small stages.

Super Diamond will be performing a Neil Diamond Tribute Oct. 3. St. Vincent will play Oct. 9, Boy and Bear will play Oct. 10 and Fitz and the Tantrums will play Oct. 11.

One can loosen up and take the dance floor at the high-end hotel, The Ritz-Carlton, in New Orleans. As well as offering rooms, the hotel offers live music by Jeremy Davenport in the Davenport Lounge, named after the hotel’s headline entertainer.

Davenport offers live entertainment Wednesdays and Thursdays 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Fridays are a popular night for swing dancing.

“It’s awesome because it’s free and super classy. There’s food, drinks, a live jazz band and also a beautiful court yard outside decorated with lights,” said Laura Wellen, junior general education major. “It’s a really cool atmosphere and whether you’re a good dancer or bad dancer, everyone just goes out there and has fun.”

Other locations offering dancing include Nola Jitterbugs, The Maison, Maple Leaf Bar and Preservation Hall in New Orleans. In Baton Rouge, dancing can be found at The Texas Club, 600 Main and Courtney Black’s Ballroom Dance Studio.

Nearby entertainment can be found outside of the realms of music or dance as well. In Hammond downtown, many can express their inner artist at Painting With a Twist. The concept is for groups to come, bring wine or their choice of beverage and paint a picture with step by step instructions. Groups can choose from over 3,500 painting and enjoy a relaxed night of drinks, chatter and paint.

Movie nights can have added excitement with a trip over to the recently opened Movie Tavern in Covington. The Movie Tavern is a restaurant movie theatre and offers dining services during the movie. With the push of a button, a server will come to your larger-than-usual chair complete with foot stool and table, and take your order.

The Movie Tavern will offer a Retro Cinema today, Sept. 30, with a showing of Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” at 7:30 p.m. Other Hitchcock films will be shown on Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout October. A “Breakfast and Flick” showing will occur Saturday and Sunday Oct. 4 and 5 at 9 a.m. where one can watch a movie and enjoy a fresh breakfast.

With the constant music, dance and unique arts, new entertainment experiences can be found for anyone. A night in the dorm can turn into a night for the books.
