The Lady Lions soccer team tackled two consecutive Southland Conference games and at the end of the weekend returned to Hammond with a record of 3-1.

They began their trip in San Antonio, Texas, battling Incarnate Word at Benson Stadium. Despite constant rain throughout the game, the Lady Lions were victorious. The first goal was scored by freshman Maggie Ramsey. This was Ramsey’s seventh goal in the season. The goal was conducted with a cross from Gisenia Utreras to Ramsey in the 17th minute.

“Maggie Ramsey’s first goal off a pass from Gisenia Utreras displayed composure in the box,” said head soccer coach, Blake Hornbuckle.

The Lady Lions’ goalkeeper, sophomore Casey Jeanfreau, from Greenville, South Carolina, defended the net against 11 attempted shots throughout the game.

Defensive players Erin Christ and Alexis Cable reinforced the backline and cut off many of the opposing teams’ advances along with Ramsey in the midfield for the second half.

Up top as the Lady Lion’s offense, Bri Singh continued to be a force against opposing teams with her handling and possession of the ball.

The second time the Lady Lions team found the net was in the second half of the game when a shot bounced off the goal keeper and went to Maddie Allen who wasted no time in crossing it to Maddie Kresevic and scoring in the 88th minute.

That was the last goal of the game, and the win had the Lady Lions advancing to 3-0 in conference. However, their weekend didn’t end there; they then continued to Abilene, Texas on Sunday.

The Lady Lions made a stand against the Abilene Christian team at Shotwell Stadium and this time the results did not favor them. 

“It was a game of missed opportunities as we were unable to capitalize on breakaway chances, point blank shots and service across the face of the goal,” said Hornbuckle.

The loss ended the Lady Lions’ four match winning streak and was their first loss in the conference dropping their record to 3-1.

The team played aggressively, and made many opportunities, but could not find the net despite 16 attempted shots throughout the game. The only shot to meet the back of the net was Bri Singh’s in the 12th minute. Singh took a cross from Villaescusa and hooked a shot into the lower left corner of the goal, past Abilene Christian’s sophomore goalkeeper, Kelsey Domhrowski.

Abilene Christian scored their first goal in the end of the first half, tying the game, when their freshman player Baylee Mitchell shot from 10 yards out.

The follow up goal, and game winner, was shot by another of their freshmen, Leslie Snider. Her goal was another distance shot from 12 yards and found the net in the 70th minute.

The next game for the Lady Lions will be Oct. 5, in Beaumont, Tx. against Lamar University.
