Music fraternity to host Halloween ball

A fun-filled ball with the opportunities to recruit, form public relations, build inter-organizational relations and have fun, will come to campus.

The first annual Halloween Harmony Ball will be put on by Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America. The Ball will take place Thursday, Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom, located on the third floor of the union. The cost of admissions is $10 for singles and $18 for couples.

“The idea of a Halloween Ball has been tossed around between members for the past four years, but it wasn’t until now that we had the right members to make it a success,” said Jarod Hopper, treasurer of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. “Every year, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia hosts an event we call the ‘Mystic Cat Ball,’ this event is held in the spring.  The ‘Halloween Harmony Ball’ was spring boarded from the ‘Mystic Cat Ball’ and is the biggest event we’ve planned yet,” said Hopper.

This event’s purpose is not only for fun, but for organizations to also network with other organizations, the student body and the community.

“The main goal of the event is an Easter egg within the name itself: harmony,” said Hopper.  “We’ve been inviting every organization that we can get a hold of to come and participate in the festivities.  We are trying to create social cohesion between students and within/between organizations with one big event.  This will be an opportunity for students to meet new people and expose organizations that aren’t always in the spotlight.”

During the ball, student organizations will be able to host a booth to promote themselves, hold an activity at their booth for others to enjoy and to bring a carved jack-o-lantern to participate in the contest if desired.

“We made it minimal requirements. There’s not even a sign-up fee, so we’ve done everything possible we could or could think of to make it as easy and as attractive and desirable for other student organizations to come into this,” said event coordinator Cody Watts. “The proceeds of tickets at the door go to the fraternity to help cover the cost of putting on the pricey production of the ball itself.  The profit will be put to use to advance our fraternity’s object.”

The fraternity has multiple fraternity objects.

“The object of this fraternity shall be for the development of the best and truest fraternal spirit; the mutual welfare and brotherhood of musical students; the advancement of music in America and a loyalty to the Alma Mater,” said Hopper. “The opportunity is not only for student organizations, but for student’s faculty and the community to come out to the pre-Halloween festivities and enjoy themselves. The ball-goers will be able to have a customizable experience by being able to vote on costumes and jack-o-lanterns.”

This is an opportunity for everyone to break out their costumes a night early and have a good time. There are many fascinations leading students and originations to this event.

Attractions to the event include: singles costume contest, couples costume contest, dance competition, jack-o-lantern contest, a performance by a Comedy Improv troup and music provided by KSLU.
