The Lady Lion’s basketball team fell short against in-state rival University of New Orleans Privateers.

The game was held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19 in the University Center with a final score of 64-76.

Senior forward Jameika Hoskins posted her second double-double of the season, leading Southeastern with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Hoskins was joined in double figures by freshman guard Taylin Underwood with 12 points, junior guard Erica Hernandez with 11 points and junior forward  Nanna Pool with 10 points. Senior guard Elizabeth Styles had a game-high 10 assists for Southeastern.

The Lady Lions changed momentum in the second half, but were never able to reclaim the lead. 

In the second half, the Lady Lions came back and were losing 57-56. UNO then came back scoring four points, which put the lead to five points. The ladies later cut the lead to three points for a second, but UNO came back and scored 12 points to end the game.

The Lady Lions played Abilene Christian Lady Wildcats later on in the week. The game was held at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday in the University Center. The ladies fought hard throughout the game against the Wild Cats, but lost 65-83. 

Annessa De La Cruz, senior guard, started the game off strong when she hit a three pointer 11 seconds into the game. The first half was close, with the Lady Lions down by only seven points. 

Along with Underwood hitting double figures, two of her teammates hit double figures during the game Saturday afternoon against Abilene Christian. Pool finished with her 10th double-double of the season, finishing with a team-high of 11 points and 13 rebounds. Styles led Southeastern with six assists, which was a game-high.

“It feels great,” said Underwood. “I got on it in the first half.”

De La Cruz found the team needs to come together more if they want future success.

“As a team, we have to come out and put two halves together,” said De La Cruz. “If we can put two halves together, we’ll be fine because we show glimpses of greatness and we have lapses, and we can’t have those lapses.”

Southeastern got as close as two points early in the second half. However, the Wildcats eventually increased the lead to double digits on a jumper by Shelstead with 7:33 remaining. Southeastern could not get closer than 10 points for the remainder of the game, as the team was outscored 38-27 in the second half.

The Lady Lions are now 7-18 in regular play and 3-11 in Conference play.

Southeastern will next travel to Northwestern State for a 6:30 p.m. contest Thursday in Natchitoches. The game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and at lionsports.net. 

Junior forward  Pool was the only other Lady Lion to score double figure points. The Mississippi native scored 11 points and also had 13 rebounds.
