The rain did not stop housing from putting on a successful Backyard Bash. 

Backyard Bash is a social event that was originally scheduled to take place in the Quad of the Union but was forced to be moved to the second floor of the War Memorial Student Union on Tuesday, March 10.

Annually, University Housing puts together events such as Backyard Bash, to gather students in a more entertaining and social manner. [The event] incorporated food, a DJ and free T-shirts to lure students in for a break from academics.  

“I work for University Housing and we have our committee within the department and it’s called Department of Program Committee where we put on events for the residents all around campus,” said Department Head of Committee, Michael Barton. “This event is specifically for reapplication to get the word out because reapplication starts this week and will run for the next two weeks or so. We’re trying to get the residents to reapply, come back on campus, live with us, so that they stay close with us.”

Considering students, it takes a lot of effort and creativity to really grab their attention. The resident assistants mainly took on the job of putting together this event, with an Alice and Wonderland theme.

“Don’t be mad, live on campus,” said resident assistant Charles Black. To go along with the theme was a house of cards pyramid game, a silly photo area and beanbag toss. 

“[Our goal] is for more people to participate because it is all about creating a community,” said junior resident assistant Gerard Frommeyer. “It takes a lot of ideas, I’m not very creative but a lot of these people are and it is fun to be able to work with them.”

The students appreciated events like Backyard Bash and actually wish they would occur more often. 

“The food is very delicious. I get free stuff, I enjoy that. I enjoy the appreciation for us and I appreciate [Housing] as a whole,” said junior criminal justice major Alexander Jackson. 

Many times, people tend to overlook the simple tasks and forget to be thankful as a whole. This event also allows students to mingle more with their peers and get to know each other better. 

“It would have been more alive if it was outside but being that it’s inside and everything, it is [better] for us to interact with each other,” said Rashaan Albert, sophomore industrial technology major. 

With no complaints being made, this event was a success. 

“Today, it was something I looked forward to and it’s a nice experience [that] drew more people to come upstairs to the [cafeteria],” said Malix Mulmore freshman, biology major. 

 It is clear that most of the students benefited from this and the resident’s assistant’s work did not go to waste.
