Southeastern’s Association for Computing Machinery are back with their biannual SLU Game On fundraiser. SLUGO is an all-night, non-stop gaming event featuring different types of video games, board games and card games. During the semester, SLUGO usually takes place on the scheduled drop date of classes and is a fundraiser video game tournament amongst fellow students on campus along with gamers within the Hammond community.
SLUGO usually lasts up to 12 hours and participants are given a variety of games to choose from. This semester’s tournament will take place on Friday, March 27 from 5 p.m. to 6 a.m. in Fayard Hall 107 and admissions will be $5.
Vice President of ACM, Jeffrey Balint commented on some of SLUGO’s history.
“This generation did not create SLUGO; it’s been going on for twelve years now,” said Balint. “The founders are long gone, and we continue the tradition of the crazy party for funds and fun.”
Balint gave insight on who usually attends the tournament, information on this semester’s special guest and also including how the participants prepare for SLUGO.
“Students from multiple majors attend to play various games together, and we usually have alumni come back just for the event. This year, we have Wyatt’s, a comic book shop down on University, coming to do a Magic the Gathering tournament,” said Balint. “The participants usually ask around to get any of the chosen games going, and the gamers really get excited and competitive once the games are started.”
Along with an appearance from Wyatt’s employees, students are free to bring their own gaming consoles, computers, televisions and other gaming electronics. Students will have a chance to compete in tournaments consisting of games such League of Legends, Super Mario Smash Bros. on Wii U, Mario Kart 8, NidHogg, Magic the Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, FIFA and Street Fighter. Tournament winners will receive prizes courtesy of SLUGO ranging from gift cards and other items.
Balint also commented on the purpose SLUGO serves as well as why students could be interested in coming to participate and attend.
“The purpose of this fundraiser is to raise funds for the Association for Computing Machinery,” said Balint. “And since it’s on a drop date, students can have a celebration and relaxation from classes.”
The Association for Computing Machinery welcomes all gamers and alumni to come out and enjoy the SLUGO fundraiser. For more information, check out the SLUGO website.
