    Rock ‘N Roar livens campus

More than 2,700 students from 69 local high schools gathered on Southeastern’s campus for the 19th annual Southeast District Literary Rally and Rock ‘N Roar.  Algebra, Biology, English and Journalism were among the topics included in the literary rally this year.

“Rock ‘N Roar is a day-long event with something for everyone and a great way to get the community, campus and area high school students together to have fun while visiting and learning about our campus,” said Kathy Pittman, director of the Southeastern Alumni Association.

This year, Rock ‘N Roar took place Saturday, March 21. The anticipated rain caused the event to end earlier than usual, although many students and community members were able to partake in the activities for a few hours.

Many organizations came out to provide entertaining games and information to those attending. One organization brought reptiles that students were able to hold and pet. Some of the reptiles included iguanas, turtles and snakes. There were also nurses performing healthcare evaluations such as checking blood pressure and heart rate.

Students had the opportunity to make pottery, get their faces painted, go through an obstacle course and hit each other with pugil sticks. For the younger children, there was a space walk set up.

Best Buddies enjoyed the interaction between the students and organization.

“Rock ‘N Roar went great. Best Buddies made over 100 dollars during the event,” said  Angela Twidwell, a member of the Best Buddies organization. “I enjoyed helping out my organization and my school the most.  I love bringing everyone together and helping the community as a whole.”

Twidell feels that Rock ‘N Roar benefits the students because it allows them to be able the see the organizations that are active on campus. It also helps the university as a whole by attracting future pupils.

In addition to the games, several camps were offered including a dance camp by the Lionettes, a hands-on art camp by art education students and a baseball camp at Alumni Field.
