    Softball comes back with two wins

    This past week has been busy for the Lady Lion Softball team. They played three games in the past week and came out with two wins.

    The Lady Lions (10-16) fell 16-1 to Mississippi State University on March 17 at North Oak Park.

    Third baseman Sydney Booker hit a team-high seventh double for the Lady Lions. Freshman outfielder Kinsey Nichols and senior second baseman Vanessa Eng each had hits. Senior first baseman Teresa Lemos, was the only run and junior Taylor Bishop struck out three in 2.1 innings.

    MSU led in the first inning with five points against senior Tori Stamper (2-3). The Bulldogs started off with a homerun by third baseman Caroline Seitz. The Bulldogs also had nine batters at the plate in the first inning.

    At the end of the first inning, Nichols made a single, Booker made a double and Amber Sather received a walk with the bases now loaded. Lemos then hit the ball deep to right field to send Nichols over home plate scoring the only point for the Lady Lions.

    The bulldogs crushed the Lady Lions by sending 13 batters to the plate in the second inning with a seven-run frame, taking the lead to 12-1. Bishop got the Lions out of the inning and also pitched a scoreless third and fourth inning. The Bulldogs finished the scoring adding four points to their score. This brought the final score to 16-1.

    The Lady Lions then travelled to Nacogdoches, Texas to compete in a Southland Conference series. 

    They started with a doubleheader Friday, March 20 against Stephen F. Austin. They swept passed SFA, winning both games and increasing their Southland winning streak to six games. The Lions received their third straight series victory as they opened league play.  

    Sather and Booker each hit home runs. Booker hit a team-high of sixth homerun of the season. The Lady Lions had an early lead of 2-0. 

    Bishop benched her first six batters, then in the third inning SFA adding a point to the board putting the score 2-1. In the fourth inning, Shelby Stewart raced home and pushed the lead to 3-1. 

    Sophomore Brittany Lewis earned a walk and then later scored on an RBI double by junior Lindsey Campbell to put the Lady Lions ahead 3-2.

    The Lady Lions added two more points to their score by RBI singles from Lemos and Moore, making the score 5-2 in the fifth inning. Bishop helped the Lady Lions win on a mercy rule with a score of 11-2.

    The Lady Lions took the leader early into the second game of the series. Sather singled in Nichols, making the score 1-0 in the first. Adding to the lead in the third inning, Eng and Nichols had singles, and then Moore hit a two-run single to put the score to 3-0. 

    SFA did not receive their first run until the fourth inning. Bishop benched two batters only keeping the lead at one, 3-2.

    With two runners, in scoring position, Booker lined a 2-0 pitch over junior Heather Hollingsworth and led the Lady Lions to a victory of 5-3. 

    The series finale was cancelled due to weather. The Lady Lions are now 5-0 in conference play for this season.
